The best thing to do in London is to try to get out of the hole.

No way. London's a great city. It's beautiful, packed with history, loads to do. It has a real buzz. Walk along the southbank, dine in Covent Garden, drink in Soho, shop in Regent Street. Clubs, theatres and bands everywhere. The parks are second to none. All big cities have their problems, but London is up there with NY, Paris,  Rome etc

I have to agree - I love going to London.

Camden Market, Going to Speakers Corner and having a laugh going to The Dove in Hammersmith Hitting the major streets - and my dad showing me all the cool Hat/shoe/tie shops and stuff like that around St James Street. Such a cool city.

... and I'm stuck up in the post-depression pit towns ...

Sure London is a nice town, but I'd take a few fields and a stream for it most days.

OMG that's too funny. I was on a hotel computer in Glasgow, and I think it must have blacked anything that mentioned London!

The silver springs grown naked dykes
Scarce own a buch of rushes
When grain got high the tasteless tykes
Grubbed up trees bank and bushes
And me they turned inside out
For sand and grit and stones
And turned my old green hills about
And pickt my very bones

^ Wasn't trying to be the intellectual.
Just - I've been studying John Clare Poetry - and thought that particular verse paralleled your own arguement.
