When he walked on stage things didn't look very promising. He looked fat and old. Much older than 71. He seemed to have trouble walking, almost like someone just stole his cane. He looked nothing like the maniac we all know from the footage from the late 50s. But when he sat down, showed his typical grin and started playing and singing, it was pretty damn clear that this was really Jerry Lee Lewis. His voice sounded a bit slurry bit still pretty good, and his piano playing was still excellent. He played a few too many mid tempo country and blues songs for my taste, but the rock & roll songs were good. He closed with Great Balls Of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On... Man, it was such a thrill seeing and hearing Jerry Lee Lewis play Great Balls Of Fire... When he was done, he looked triomfantly into the crowd, as af he wanted to say ""Did you see that? I may be old, but I can still do it, dammit!". It was pretty cool. |
