I reckon there are a lot of things which the Beatles were able to do which only they could really have done, or carried off, or succeeded at. And the same goes for each individual Beatle. So, what is there?

I reckon only John Lennon could have got away with his famous quote
''Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands ? All the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewelry''

But every so often you come across something truly inspiring...

Only Paul could smooth over John's flippant comments to minimalize the damage with that charming grin of his!

Don't think it was cheek - more timerity (sp). They'd seen Cliff crash and burn and didn't want to suffer the same ignomity.

Frank Zappa released a triple album set (1 + 2) - Joes Garage - in Sept and November 1979 and began recording his follow up (Tinsel Town Rebellion) that very month.
Sorry, that took some work, but I had to find one.

I'm always confused with the whole American No1 claim.

Mccartney states that they would only tour America when they had a No 1 - and this happened with I Want To Hold Your Hand.
Yet - Harrison says it was handy to have a number one hit, as they were already booked to go there after Paris.

So... had Epstein already planned the American tour regardless of a number one ..and then just been lucky in his timing ...
Or... was the American tour quickly organised after I Want To Hold Your Hand had peaked at No 1 in America

Zappa regularly issued three albums a year in the early part of his career. 61 official releases during hiss lifetime!

Paul is just having some fun with the story. You're right when you say, "Epstein already planned the American tour regardless of a number one ..and then just been lucky in his timing ..." The timelines all back this up. Paul could not have anticipated that IWTHYH would go to number 1. The Beatles were all ecstatic in Paris when they heard the news, because they were fearing to flop!

But when did he finnish? June and began the next one in November? It's not the same ... and many years later ...
I thought we were talking about the time the group still existed ... because surely Prince, to say one, have done something like that too ... and surely Bob gave marihuana to someone else for the first time or someone else (less famous, of course) have said "bigger than Jesus" somewhere ... anyway, thanks for the info, Kevin!

Umm, do you mean Cliff Notes ?

And to keep the post on track ... only the Beatles would have said "No" to George Martin when he offered them a song to record that was destined to be a # 1 hit for someone , saying they wanted their first #1 to be a song they had written ... and they hadn't even written it yet!

The song they turned down was "How Do You Do It", which did go on to #1 for another Brian Epstein group, Gerry and the Pacemakers. It was written by Mitch Murray - born the same year as John!!, and who I think went on to write other great pop tunes: "Hitching a Ride" released by Vanity Fair, "I'm Telling You Now", "Billy Don't Be a Hero", by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, and "The Night Chicago Died".

The song they ultimately submitted for George Martin's approval to replace instead of "How Do You Do It" was ... "Please Please Me", their first # 1 hit!!  They had actually written it already, and played it to GM, asking for it to be recorded instead of "How Do You Do It". He actually turned it down the first time they submitted it   , "too slow and dirgelike" were the gist of his comments. John took it back, sped it up, and voila, BeatleMania here we come

I love John,
I love Paul,
And George and Ringo,
I love them all!
