Thought we could do with a thread about movies. So what have you seen recently?

Blow Up 1966, Michelangelo Antonioni.

Watched this last night for about the tenth time. Brilliant movie about swinging sixties London fashion photographer played by David Hemmings who unwhittingly records a murder in one of his photographs. Contains a very rare appearence of both Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck playing together in The Yardbirds, until Beck smashes his guitar a la Pete Townsend. It's really a film about how we percieve reality, or not.

Blood Diamond.

Blood Diamond is an Academy Award-nominated 2006 film directed and produced by Edward Zwick. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou. The title refers to blood diamonds, which are diamonds mined in war zones and sold to finance the conflicts. On January 23, 2007, it was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Best Supporting Actor (Djimon Hounsou).

"Wings IV introduced Jimmy McCulloch, a spunky lead guitarist with grit, able to spur Paul on unlike any previous soloist. His debut track, the magnificent single `Junior's Farm', stands as one of Wings' finest emotional and technical releases."

"Few people on this planet know as much about Jimmy's musical history than you."

"I'm Joe English and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland." xD

Watched Life Is Beautiful again this weekend. Can't recommend it enough. Cinema at its best - every shot, even the concentration camp scenes - are made with such loving care. Not a minute of the film is wasted. A joy.

I've never seen it, and I really should. Is that the one when Benigni jumped all over the chairs at the Oscars?

It's suprisingly good. None of the original characters appear, it just continues the story 6 months later. A lot more blood and gore, so if you're into horror flicks it's a winner. Well directed with plenty of tension.

Saw two on the weekend.
American History X (I know I should have seen it already. Great, but a tad predictable.)
The Butterfly Effect  - excellent. The tag of a "time travelling teenager returning to fix his life" nearly made me not watch it, but it was very clever and thought provoking. Strongly recommended.

Excellent film! One of my all time favourites- very very cleverly written and thoght through. I've seen it twice now but different versions so they had different endings- one was the editor's cut you see- and it made the film vary as a whole quite dramatically! Both were good though.

I watched Casanova the other night- the BBC Television serial one (but still counts as a film right?) with David Tennant and Peter O'Toole and other such people- thought it was excellent- a really good piece of period set drama. Fabulous

But every so often you come across something truly inspiring...

i saw Ocean's Thirteen friday night. good movie but it ended up costing me $42 for two tickets, two medium sodas, a medium popcorn and nachos.

...and people wonder why the movie industry is tanking...

I saw The Simpsons Movie last night. It's ok to good - everything you'd expect from a Simpson movie.
But....
1.there is nothing in the movie you won't see in a normal episode (with two small and insignificant exceptions.) In fact the whole thing feels a bit watered down - Itchy and Scracthy are suprisingly tame. The whole show seems less edgy than the series.
2. no suprises. Homer screws up, Marge holds them together, Liza is righteous.... They do nothing out of the ordinary and the plot line would easily fit in with the sereies.
3. supporting caste. From what I remember only one character outside the family gets anything more than a cameo appearance, and it ain't Mr Burns (boooo).

Good, but maybe ten years too late.

I'd forgotten about this thread. I'll break the habit of a (recent) lifetime and actually go to the cinema to watch The Simpsons. I'll try to see it in the afternoon though. It doesn't sound that great though, from what I've read. The bit with Bart should be a laugh!

I guess I was just expecting something a bit darker and subversive  - it was a chance for them to get a bit deeper than they could on TV. But maybe people don't want that. It seemed very well recieved by the audience.
I expected more, but at the end of the day it's The Simpsons, so they can't go too wrong. It will make you laugh.
ps do they dub it in Danish? It musd be wierd if they do

I doubt it. Kids stuff, and things like Shrek get dubbed by famous (?) Danish actors, but they also show the original too. Even the Danes would rather see the original versions.

BBC is running a British Film series at the moment. Some classics I'd forgotten - especially Hayley Mills in Tiger Bay. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

Rewatched La Gaan on the weekend - the first Bollywood movie i've enjoyed rather than endured - probably in my top ten list now. An Indian movie (obstentiously) about cricket but with a hollywood vision. Even the songs were good. BM - you would LOVE this.

I'm not a big fan of sixties cinema. I guess it parralled the music industry in that it was trying new ideas and playing with new technology. For me too many tricky camera angles and groovy nonsense.
Seems to go in ten year cycles. Fifties, seventies and nineties seem to have produced the bulk of classic cinema. Sixties and eighties and noughties (with the odd exception of course) doesn't appeal too much to me.
Mind - I highly regard the kids classics - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Great Race, Those Magnificent Men etc. (and all edwardian - just like the UK Pyschedelic music dandies!) And of course James Bond and AHDN. But things like Easyrider, 2001 and  Clockwork Orange all seem a bit to too selfconscious and "aware" for me.  They were trying to hard. The realism of the 70's (eg Scorcese) was a nice flashback to the fifties

You're right - I never thought about that. It's all about "feelings," with that will-they won't-they (yay they do!) thing all romcoms have. I hate romcoms. I was had by the great soundtrack and obsesive collecting references. The swine.
And I just HAVE to check out the Beta Band

I don't get to see movies in theatres very often, but I will be going to the city in a few weeks and I will get to see one then. What can everyone recommend? I already saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (it was great) and I also wanna see Hairspray.

^ yeah, I think that is one of the best scenes ... the spin on what proposal signifies is pretty clever.

Some of my favoueite lines:

                         Some people never
got over 'Nam, or the night their
band opened for Nirvana.  I guess I
                         never really got over Charlie.

___

And I lost it.  I lost it all.
                         Dignity, faith, fifteen pounds...

___

I could've ended up having sex back
there.  And what better way to
                         exorcize rejection demons than to
screw the person who rejected you,
right?  But you wouldn't be sleeping
with a person.  You'd be sleeping
                         with a whole sad single-person
culture.  It'd be like sleeping with
Talia Shire in "Rocky" if you weren't
                         Rocky.

Lewis' turn in 'Gangs of New York' is a masterpiece. Totally sold me on his brilliance as an actor. I caught 'Last of the Mohicans' for the first time on the toob last night. OK, but his later work really stands out.

I was really hoping to hear his british accent in Gangs of NY but I was let down. But not totally because he is a genius. I really admire his depth in his characters.
