The official numbers say that John, Paul and George are all 5'11. So how come that Paul is much taller on the cover of Sgt Pepper? Did John and George shrink?
That was one of the Paul is Dead theroys which claimed that his replacement was much taller when he joined them

It's not that Paul was that much taller; he probably got those inserts in his shoes!
Like Raxo, I believe the 5'9" claim. George was not part of the marketing machine when he said that, so had no reason to fudge his height (and the Beatle boots had long gone).
Although 3' 7" would have made Ringo happy. For once, he wouldn't be the short one.

So my theory is (ahem) the Beatles looked taller when they were younger because they were, both absolutely and relatively. Then, as age came along and the new younger generation grew up, they experienced both actual and relative height diminishment. To quote Ringo, "Why are they always taller than me?"
