I started off just remembering summers. "Were we really there?"; "Was it real?"; Sometimes for a lot of people your memories, particularly childhood memories, seem so golden and you think "did it really never rain all summer or am I just imagining the sunny bits? And then the phrase, "you tell me," began to be the theme of the song. I wrote it out in Long Island, during one of those summers. I was just looking at red cardinal. For someone English it's magical, seeing a bright red bird coming out of a tree, so he appeared in the lyric. A lot of it was actually just there as I was writing. It became a tribute to golden summers.
I personally think, that Paul is demonstrating his excellent PR skills. I find this song quite sarcastic towards a woman the man loved. And the man in the song accuses her of not loving him anymore.
I mean, who is "you" when he says "lets see, you tell me"
Thoughts anyone?

I like the sarcastic feel on this song ,it's also their in Gratitude and Only Mama knows, i feel. Not something Paul is noted for in his song writing , just illustrates for me how much he's hurting ? It's been one hell of a mess for all concerned .
Talking about the You Tell Me section in the Paul's official webpage. IT'S CRAP. I've already asked like 1.000 questions and he always tells me the same answers. Crap.
