ok, i'm going to london next saturday for holiday... and i've 10 days but i don't know what to do with them when i'm there... is someone here who knows some beautiful places i should visit? or some places to eat good and cheap? i've a tourist-guide but usually it's the best to ask people who live there or have been there a few times... they know the city the best. beside of the usual sight-seeing i want to visit abbey road of course, i also want to see the place where the subterranean homesick blues video is shot (i found out where it is... and i'll hold up a card that says YAY for a photo ) then i want to eat ben & jerry's icecream because everyone tells me it's the best icecream in the world and you can't buy it in austria... oh i'm all excited when i think about it... only 6 days more to go

ooohh exciting! I go to London quite often- but I won't know as much as those who live there but heres a few places that I personally like:
- Covent Garden- little area well worth spending a couple of hours there. It has a little rock shop which had good band merchandise last time I went and 'BEN'S COOKIES'! the BEST cookies ever theyre amazing- I usually hate cookies, but these are completely liquid inside- yum, and theres a decent little market if you go on the right day, and it has the shops 'Lush' and 'B' (bath stuff and makeup- I always visit because they do really inventive cruelty free stuff at decent prices)
- Abbey Road (you have already said- tis definately a must!)
- Camden Market- whatever day it is on, theres just a lot of interesting shops- some slightly alternative ones and the market often has really varied shops and so most people can find something they like!
- Oxford Street if you feel like any serious shopping- the clothes shops are so massive compared to the littler city shops near me so whenever I'm there I usually go to Oxford Circus to get some shopping in (notably the huge Topshop which has a huge vintage floor with some really good one-off clothes)
Baker Street- for the Beatles shop! It is a bit along the street from where the Apple shop used to be- it's fairly small but has lots of cool Beatles stuff. And they advertise a little Beatles museum they have or something though I've never gone in. It is supposed to have original Beatles items on show though
- Harrods... if you feel like it just to experience it! I have been there a couple of times and feel completely out of place amongst all the expensive stuff but I love mooching around the food halls for a bit because they have so much interesting food! And theres a chocolate cafe on one of the floors where you can buy cups of pure melted chocolate- very good stuff!
- Some parks - A proper Londoner can tell you about this better I'm sure but I just know that I've been to some lovely parks around London which are just nice places to walk through or sit down for a bit! Regents Park is the one I remember best
- Theatre- just because theres so much good theatre in the West End so if you get a chance to catch a show then it's goood! (though you may already be planning on this..or you might not like theatre- but theres stuff to suit everyone generally)
Hope you have a really good time whatever you end up doing!
But every so often you come across something truly inspiring...
All cities are noisy, most people there do use deodorant, most of it doesn't stink
You talking from experience? I clearly see/experience it in a very different way to you. I love the place!
I go there a couple of times a month with work. It's a b**** to get into, a b**** to get out of, everyone is running around like mad people, it's full of foreigners that can't speak properly, every breath is full of exhaust fumes. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I prefer rolling meadows, a nice stream and lots of trees, somewhere you can hear yourself think. I prefer a peaceful place.
But please go there and waste your money, it's good for British economy.
thanks a lot for the hints and links, now i'm even more excited
i was always a city-person... i like hundreds and thousands of people around me... nothing wrong with trees and silence and healthy air... but in the end i always want to return to a city with more than a million people living there.
i was already in london but only for a very short time... and i haven't seen much of it (not even abbey road...) but i like it... and i'm sure i'll like it even more when i've more time.
yay

.
An obviously living in this rural idyll has allowed you to become the relaxed, warm and friendly person you are. Living in all this smog just makes you intolerant, uptight and aggessive.
and i can tell you... it was wonderful. i had my problems (damn hostel, damn shower...) and i was terrible in fear of my turtle because i forgot to give my mum the key to get into my home to feed her... (she survived, i'm so happy) but london was great. i did a lot of shopping, sight seeing and of course beatle-sight-seeing. i visit abbey road (of course) apple studios, ect ect... and what i liked most was the chiswick house where rain & paperback writer was filmed. well, i only saw the garden... it was too late to get into the house. it's very, very beautiful even without the beatle-connection. but it's even better to sit on the tree where george harrison was leaning on ~ 40 years ago thanks for the tips... they helped me a lot, i was in notting hill too (and bought a record) and i visit the camden market...

Glad you enjoyed your trip. There is so much to see and do in London, it's difficult to know where to start. I was brought up there, and only moved away 8 years ago (to Denmark). Photo's??
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
