i just listened to live at the roxy by social distortion...what a great great album...does anybody else besides joost and me listen to them???mike ness is so fantastic a player....story of my life is a fave....mommies little monster rocks too...give them a listen...and tell me what you think...
Yeah, I like 'em. Especially the song When The Angels Sing is special to me. Here's why.
Six years ago (damn, that long already?) two friends of mine died in a car crash. One was buried and one cremated, so they each had different funeral services. At both services, the song When The Angels Sing was played. And that wasn't even planned, both funerals were organized seperately and the parents hadn't discussed what music they were going to play. So it was a coincidence. Not a huge coincidence since they were both Social D fans and When The Angels Song is about dying. but still: a coincidence.
Then a few days later the car wreck was examined and they found what CD had been in their car stereo: White Light White Heat White Trash by Social Distortion. Some people then recreated their fatal drive and found out that if you start playing WLWHWT at the point where they started driving, you pass the tree that they hit during the song When The Angels Sing.
mike has two solo albums too...under the influences and cheating at cheating at solitaire...he unlike me likes dylan too..go figure...ball and chain is a great song...here is the offical site..http://www.socialdistortion.com/ and the music page..http://www.socialdistortion.com/music.html his new song has a line that state you shake my hand while your pissing on my leg...with friends like you who needs enemies....
I'm going to be incredibly shallow - as soon as I saw the name I was put off. I pigeonholed them as earnest and angry. And that's how they sound to me. (though I only had the briefest of listens). I don't mind a bit of social commentary in my songs, I just find it a tad obvious? Then again, I really do like The Pistols Anarchy in the UK and God Save The Queen. But there's a cartoonishness to their music that I like (like The Ramones) Then again it's a genre I don't really care for, so what do I know.
I think it's unfair to pigeonhole them because of their name. That's a name they made up when they were 16 year old punks, they're over 40 now. And there's not that much social commentary in Social Distortion's songs. Their songs are mostly about personal issues. Depression, love, addiction, sex, regrets, etc. They're also not your typical punk band, they owe more to Bruce Springsteen (who is a fan, by the way), The Stones and Johnny Cash than, say, the Sex Pistols. I'd say their music is a mixture of 1/3 rock, 1/3 blues and 1/3 punk.
Not my kind of thing I'm afraid. I've heard similar stuff done much better. Or maybe it was the poor quality of the sound clips. They sound like they've been listening to a lot of post punk power pop. (Try saying that when you're pissed.)
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
