-I know that Yoko Ono sang on "Bungalow Bill" (you can hear her voice, which almost sounds like a child's)
-Eric Clapton played guitar on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
-George Martin played the instrumental on "In My Life"
-I just found out on another thread that Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones played sax on "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)"
I would love to find out more. What you guys got? |

There aren't a lot of guests that play conventional rock/pop instruments. Clapton, The Stones, Brian Jones. Billy Preston, of course. I guees Andy White was also a guest. Mostly the guests were classical musicians. And of course George Martin playing the odd harpsichord, and organ.

In All You Need Is Love apart from the crappy Jagger-Richards , Marianne Faithfull and Patti Harrison are singing backgrounds. Yoko and Patti are also in Birthday. Maureen is in Bungalow Bill. George Martin also plays that fantastic honky-tonk piano in Lovely Rita and Rocky Raccoon. And also Mal Evans play a lot of percussion in some records, like Mr Kite he played harmonica or tambourine in Dear Prudence. Well, there are many guests. Who doesn't want to work with the Fab Four? |

I don't know that Stones song, unfortunately. Too bad John and Paul didn't guest on one of their #1's ("Ruby Tuesday" or "Get Off My Cloud") |

I'm really enjoying this thread!

Not forgetting the instrument of hammer and anvil, which he played in Maxwell's Hammer... |

And (I think) Mal Evans also played the alarm clock that is really faint that goes off just before "Woke up, got out of bed ..." in "A Day in the Life". |

I've read that it was too fast for him, and so they recorded it at half speed then sped it up for the record. Also ... have heard that he played the piano on "Long Tall Sally". It has been so long since I've listened to anything but live versions of this (obviously no piano), I was actually quite shocked when I did recently listen to the album version and heard the piano ... it really changes the song. Actually, except for parts of a phrase here and there, the whole album version seems so much tamer than the live versions (like the BBC version, or various youtube versions). |

And that's Mal counting the 24 bars of the orchestral passage. |

I can't really pick out John and Paul on "We Love You"--there are background vocals but they don't have clarity to me.
Nicky Hopkins was awesome. He's right in the middle of that classic Stones sound (late 60s-early 70s). "Angie" is a high point--though there are plenty of them. His solo album's supposed to be good Tin Man was a Dreamer (I think).
It's amazing the Beatles didn't collaborate with their peers more. I guess these days they'd be on 50 Cent's Curtis record or maybe they'd be on Kanye West's.
John and Fiddy, what a pair.

To me, Nicky Hopkins will always be associated w/ the Stones. His body of work w/ them is definitely memorable. When The Fab needed to lay down some complex keyboard work (that Macca couldn't handle) they always ran to Sir George Martin--For Mick & the boys, it was always Nicky Hopkins. I 'll always recall his delicate classical piano style in "She's A Rainbow". I remember hearing it through a crappy transistor radio in late '67, and even then it was catchy. He was fixture w/them, and he looked very content playing w/the Bad Boys of Rock all the way up to their legendary TV film from '68 "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus" (which I now have on dvd--and it's a treasure) r.i.p. Nicky (say hello to Brian Jones for me) |
