John Lennon photo found after 50 years
Taken in 1958, the photo of John Lennon, right, and Nigel Walley, was stolen from a school desk, emerging some 50 years later
The black-and-white image was taken in Liverpool and shows a 17-year-old Lennon, dressed in a heavy camel hair coat in Lime Street in 1958. Sporting a 1950s quiff, Lennon is pictured alongside Nigel Walley, the former manager of The Quarrymen – the group which later became The Beatles.
The picture was uncovered during the filming of the BBC documentary Inside Out North West, which aimed to find new photos of Lennon.
Walley, who now lives in Clacton, Essex, had not seen the image since 1958.
He said: " It's very emotional for me seeing this photo again after all these years. John was a very good friend of mine.
"One thing I know John would have loved, was seeing this photograph. It's something I'll always treasure now.
"I think the photographer came up to us because we were wearing those camel coats. Just look at the lapels, amazing aren't they?
"I recognise my writing on the back of it. I've put 'May 5th 1958 Lime Street'. I haven't a clue what we were doing then - just a couple of lads out in town larking about probably. But we look happy then.
"It is a long time ago now but I seem to remember giving this photograph and some other Beatles photos to my brother and he took them to school where someone stole them from his desk. Goodness knows where this one got to since then."
The photo emerged after an anonymous Beatles collector, who bought the image at an auction, came forward.
