The Pepper movie was one of the worst of any kind, ever. It ruined Peter Frampton's career.
This movie was on the other night and I tried to watch it as a novelty. I hadn't seen it in years and I thought it would be good for at least a laugh. WRONG! I could not sit through it. What a horrible movie. They didn't even let them do any acting cuz they were so bad. George Burns had to do all their lines. How pathetic is that? As for LOVE, I thought it was AMAZING! But the difference is is that they use the ACTUAL Beatles. I mean, it's the Beatles singing and talking. God that makes such a difference. I'm seeing Across the Universe this Friday and I'm hoping I can sit through it. It really does look good, but it's so hard for me to sit through people butchering Beatles songs. Do they actually show the rooftop concert and cavern in it? It would be worth it just for that! They should have made a modern ant-war film. I mean, Vietnam is old news and we DO actually have a war going on for God's sake. Although I guess Vietnam goes better with the 60's theme.
they show the actor's and they sing in the Cavern and they sing on the rooftop...it's not the actual Beatles but
"Wings IV introduced Jimmy McCulloch, a spunky lead guitarist with grit, able to spur Paul on unlike any previous soloist. His debut track, the magnificent single `Junior's Farm', stands as one of Wings' finest emotional and technical releases."
"Few people on this planet know as much about Jimmy's musical history than you."
"I'm Joe English and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland." xD

"Across The Universe", is a hodge-podge of music videos in my opinion--sung by ppl that aren't the Beatles. Must we like every cover version of songs we associate w/ the original entity that created it ? For example, even Bono, who I respect greatly(for his own U2 material)doesnt neccessarily enhance a Lennon/McCartney composition just because he's a major rock star himself...we are not automatically obliged to adore every interpretation, unless of course you count yourself among the vast legions of mindless sycophants who accepts everything you see as Beatle-related on face value. I'm more discerning than that.
AND as for "Love", I"m well aware that this "stage show" contains ACTUAL BEATLE recordings-- which, admitedly, differentiates it from "Universe", but in this instance I was speaking of PRODUCTION VALUES---NOT MUSIC. How do jugglers and acrobats convey the more cerebral elements of some of the later period Lennon/McCartney/Harrison songs ? --the ONLY song that comes to mind that lends itself to this theme is perhaps "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite"---but does "Nowhere Man" and songs of this ilk?? IMO it's a ridiculous premise. And as to your further contention that it's thoroughly acceptable because it has the approval of the band and Apple....uh..don't you mean the approval of 50% of the Beatles and Apple...? Last time I checked Lennon & Harrison were dead. How do we KNOW John or George would have approved???? Can we be so audacious to assume we know what two deceased artist would feel..? Come now..isn't that just a TAD presumptuous??? Just because Yoko and Olivia gave their assent to these two wretched shows doesnt mean their late respective spouses would've not found fault (at least thematically)with them. ("wretched shows" is my term, of course, and I'm well within my rights to deem them as such if I choose) For me the last PURE Beatle production was LET IT BE...[i]anything subsequent are merely paltry attempts to bask in a reflected glory not of their own making...THAT honor ONLY belongs to JPGR..collectively.
Well first of all did you watch the movie or are you just jumping to conclusion(without watching it) and saying its absolute crud because the beatles aren't singing the songs? You sure make out sound like if its not The Beatles then its absolute crude. You're also making it seem that anyone who wants to do a modern day thing with beatles music that they're just doing it to make money. You need to stop being so close minded man. It sure seems like your motto is "If its not The Beatles then it sucks!"

first of all, try reading a little closer to a person's full comments before you "jump to the conclusion" that I did not see the works in question.. you're wrong, I did...and what my personal critique about a given film is...well, that remains my own choice. Just as yours is your own. Secondly, don't make automatic assumptions about subjective comments before you gather all the facts. I never said that ALL covers of Beatle compositions were "crud", (if you look a little closer--and obviously you didnt, you'll see that I gave high praise to a few --e.g., Cocker's rendition of "WALHFMF" is a case in point) The conclusion you drew on this point was also unfounded.
I have extolled the merits of many a Beatle/Lennon/McCartney/Harrison cover over the years--Stone's doing "I Wanna Be Your Man", Brazil '66 "Fool On The Hill"...even Elvis covering George's "Something"...et al.
I do not need to continually defend my position if I dont happen to like "Across the Universe" (film)...or for that matter, "Love". I have been following The Beatles (in the flesh) since 1964...I think I'm old enough to make up my own mind about personal likes or dislikes on works regarding this band. Personal opinion may be assailable, but it also has the right to remain steadfast...which, in the present case, it does.
Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream... Special Member

I too was VERY sceptical about the "Love" project (just read some of my past comments on this board) but I have seen it and my wife (who incidentally is not a Beatle fan at all!) and I absolutely loved it (no pun intended!).

Still waiting for those pictures Al!!!
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
I am yet to see the film Across The Universe although it has FINALLY come out in Australia. I am looking forward to seeing it so I can make a judgement on whether it is good or not. The thing about the movie is that it is introducing The Beatles to an entirely new crowd, for example one of my friends who listens to shitty music actually knows the title to a beatles song for once and enjoys the songs and reckons it is a great movie. From the reviews that I have read it seems that 'Across The Universe' has been getting some solid and very good reviews so hopefully it will be bloody good.
Suddenly this whole controversy is reminding me of The Lord of the Rings movies. You had people who know and loved the book, who took issue with some of Peter Jackson's creative retelling. On the other hand, his movie introduced Tolkien to a lot of people who otherwise would never have picked him up. Of those, a certain subset came to be introduced to the beauty of Middle-earth the way that Tolkien had envisioned it.
So I suppose I ought to see this movie, to see if the analogy is appropriate.
All you've got to do is choose love. That's how I live it now. I learned a long time ago, I can feed the birds in my garden. I can't feed them all. -- Ringo Starr, Rolling Stone magazine, May 2007
For all I know, Ringo might be a yogi disguised as a drummer! - George Harrison

I'll grant this ONE concession...that "Universe" could potentially attract new faithful to Beatle ideology..but that's it's only redeeming characteristic, IMO.
I loved that all the leads are so young, because the music of the Beatles should be sung and heard by young people. I'm not saying the covers are anywhere as good as the originals, of course! Just that this is a good film which I thoroughly enjoyed. Oh, and I'm not that young myself.
I wonder should I call you but I know what you'd do You'd say I'm putting you on But it's no joke it's doing me harm.... Tell me tell me tell me come on tell me the answer You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer.... When I get near you The games begin to drag me down It's alright I'll make you maybe next time around.... I wonder where you are tonight and why I'm by myself...

I haven't seen the film, but I heard some of the music the other day, and it wasn't bad. Waiting for the DVD.
May I direct you to the Old Codgers Thread WaMoZ. I think you qualify!
personally im just glad theyre are still doin beatles projects in any shape or form.
theres only so much you can do with original stuff, so its either get no more beatles releases of any kind or have some reworking of there stuff,i choose the latter.
don't get me wrong i can understand some folks reasons for having issues with shows like love and across the universe, but its also a great way of making the beatles music live on and recruiting new fans ? The Beatles don't get much airplay on radios now a days and apart form maybe a parent playing the albums in the house the chances of kids hearing them to get into them is very little.
look at the amount of people who got into the beatles after listening to love and went on to become huge beatles fans off of it, i think its great.
and you can always just listen to the original albums and watch the original movies and forget any of this is even happening ?

That's a refreshing attitude. I have no problem with this kind of thing. If you do then you don't have to watch it. And as you say, it brings The Beatles to the attention of people who otherwise wouldn't hear them. I really don't understand people who think of The Beatles as some untouchable god like thing, and that it's sacriligeous to make a film or cover a song. Ridiculous.
