John was always my fave Beatle and I do remember watching the news when he died in 1980 (I was 11). I know they showed the film HELP as a tribute. The man was just a genius and a great wit.  John did it all (wrote songs/sang/played guitar/wrote poetry/did art/did everything for peace.
Why can't John get a posthumous Knighthood I say! So many artists in rock owe a lot to John.  Still miss u after all these years.  May peace be with you John (you're still number one).

Returning his MBE and spending the last ten years of his life in America won't have helped.

I try to stay away from threads like this, as all this hero worship is unhealthy.

Re: the posthumous Knighthood. First of all, you think John would want one? Having sent his MBE back, and knowing his distaste for the 'establishment', you think he would accept it, or that he would be offered it in the first place if he were still alive? Secondly, their is virtually no such thing as a posthumous Knighthood. There are, and have been exceptions. A posthumous Knighthood may be awarded for gallantry. And posthumous Knighthood's have been awarded to people who have died between acceptance, and presentation. But it has to have been accepted. Apart from that, if you're dead, you're off the list.

If John were still alive, Paul probably wouldn't have been a knight.

Good point, though I don't think The Queen, or The Government would have been too embarrassed about awarding a Knighthood just to Paul. Having sent his MBE back (though officially he's still John Lennon MBE) there's no way he'd ever be awarded anything else.

I'm not sure. Awarding Paul with the knighthood should have created a precedent. People would have wondered why Paul and not John? Plus the likes of Mick (and Bob Geldof?)

Geldof's only an honourary recipient, as he's not British. I have no problem with him having it, but I still can't understand what he did to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music award a few years ago at The Brits.

There's no way in hell John would want a knighthood. NO WAY!! And he'd be ridiculing Macca for accepting one much in the same way that Keith Richards does Jagger. It's just not cool. Not to that generation. I thought they pretty much stood for the opposite of what that whole thing represents? I know things have changed and all, but come on, have some integrity. Stand by at least SOME of what your originally believed in for God's sake. Besides, Lennon would be a U.S. citizen by now and probably wouldn't be eligible.

I agree. But I think John would've scoffed at a knighthood, though..he saw such things as disingenious
