"Wings IV introduced Jimmy McCulloch, a spunky lead guitarist with grit, able to spur Paul on unlike any previous soloist. His debut track, the magnificent single `Junior's Farm', stands as one of Wings' finest emotional and technical releases."
"Few people on this planet know as much about Jimmy's musical history than you."
"I'm Joe English and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland." xD
Hm well he hasn't released one for 21 years so maybe it's time for another one? Or maybe he should wait till his career is finished and then release an anthology type thing.

A french guy posted it there, and I asked him for some source (I'm carlos06 there ). I hope he asks.

People, if you think about it, we still don't have a definitive Paul McCartney retrospective. "Wings Greatest" is far from that, just an LP released even before Wings disbanded, "All the Best!" remains really unfinished, and "Wingspan" is just a Wings compilation adding 4 years of Paul's solo career.
I hope the new album will be as the compilation I made 2 years ago - "Ultimate McCartney" ha! A career retrospective with 40 songs chronologically listed. From "Maybe I'm Amazed" to "Jenny Wren". He could release a 2-CD retrospective career album, or maybe a 1-CD greatest hits, maybe under the concept of "#1's", but he didn't achieve number-one hits since "Hope of Deliverance" in 1993 (#1 in Germany), so I don't know what's gonna be. Maybe is a CD version of "The McCartney Years" .

He's only ever had 4 No.1's in Britain, post Beatles, so maybe he should release an EP.
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.

Cool, what was the playlist for the one you made, or at least some of the songs?
Yeah, I like the idea of a truly definitive album that spans his entire career. I look forward to anything new that comes out.

On July 8th 2007 I wrote about that album I made:
Ultimate McCartney / Greatest Hits 1970-2006
CD 1 (70-79) 1: Maybe I'm Amazed (the studio version from McCartney) 2: Another Day (his first single, I supposed that this one was not good enough to be the first track of the collection, that's because I put Maybe I'm Amazed as the opener) 3: Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey 4: Give Ireland Back To The Irish 5: Hi, Hi, Hi 6: C Moon 7: My Love 8: Live And Let Die 9: Helen Wheels (or, as I sing it, 'Heather Mills' ) 10: Jet 11: Band On The Run 12: Junior's Farm (my mistake here was to choose the DJ edit, when the full version could be fit) 13: Listen To What The Man Said 14: Silly Love Songs 15: Let 'Em In 16: Mull Of Kintyre 17: With A Little Luck (the DJ edit, the album version is too long!) 18: Goodnight Tonight 19: Wonderful Christmastime This CD's lenght is 77:40!
CD 2 (80-06) 1: Coming Up (the studio version) 2: Waterfalls (the DJ edit) 3: Ebony And Ivory (the single edit, with an early -really short- fade-out) 4: Take It Away (my own edit, with a quite strange mix in its intro, because I took the original version from the 'Tug of War' album which is mixed along with the final chords from the title track, so this one sounds a little weird) 5: Say Say Say 6: Pipes Of Peace (the single edit) 7: So Bad 8: No More Lonely Nights (the single edit) 9: We All Stand Together 10: Spies Like Us 11: Press (not the single edit, because I can't found it!) 12: Once Upon A Long Ago 13: My Brave Face 14: This One 15: Hope Of Deliverance 16: Young Boy 17: The World Tonight 18: No Other Baby (because of time restrictions, I haved to make my own edit, editing the track from 4:17 to 2:29, it sounds nice) 19: Freedom (OK, this was a big mistake. I should have put 'From A Lover To A Friend' if I wanted to put something from the 'Driving Rain' album... But my mum love this one) 20: Fine Line 21: Jenny Wren (the studio version, I should have put the single edit...) The lenght of this second CD is even more impressive than the first one: 79:54!!
Every track was mastered (by me, sure) making a really good work with the handful of tracks that I don't have in CD and I've downloaded. Of course I made a nice 8-page (just 8-page...) booklet for the set, including a lot of info from every track, including recording/releasing dates, musicians for every track and three photos from the Chaos and Creation sessions.
I think it's a pretty good collection. The quality sound is stunning and the selection is quite good. But at this point I think "Tug Of War" should be instead of "So Bad". Whatever...

I was listening to the album today, and it's really cool the idea of travel through an entire career of 4 decades in only 2 hours and a half. Paul had so many hits, and so many good records. I think this new compilation could be really good.

Another career-spanning anthology would be redundant, but something like a Wingspan II covering the period from 1985 to the present would be a good idea. Something else I'd really love to see is a good two disc compilation of George Harrison's best solo work.
Hi Geoff, welcome to the forums.
Wingspan II? That would be assuming Wings were actually a band after 1980!
He's had a few 'best of' compilations, neither of which really cover all the ground. I'm in agreement with Wingsman. All the singles, from start to finish, up to MAF. Maybe in a box set with b-sides and outtakes. If it's just another incomplete mish-mash (which I suspect it will be) then I don't see the point.

Ooofff...good point about there not being any Wings after 1980; duh.
I like the box set idea, but I'd go heavy on album tracks. McCartney's one of those guys whose best stuff is often buried in albums and goes unnoticed in favor of more calculatedly commercial stuff that gets the airplay. Give me a few days and I'll see if I can come up with a list of my favorite McCartney tracks, for what it's worth.

Yeah... it wasn't my ideal collection either. Why you'd include, say, "Man We Was Lonely" from McCartney instead of "That Would Be Something" is a mystery that probably only Paul could answer. There are at least a dozen tracks I'd change myself.

Did Paul choose the songs included on Wingspan? I don't know exactly. Sometimes there is a "compilation creator" who picks up the material and knows less about Paul's music than many fans. So, it's really sad to have the huge fan base crying because the album was "made too bad". The only good thing about Wingspan is the remastering I would say. We need a career retrospective, 1970-2008, 40 songs, maybe 2 new ones, all of them ordered chronologically. Simple as that.

Good idea, but I'd make two separate compilations myself: one ending with Back To The Egg, and the other picking up from there.
Well, your idea is not bad at all, but in any case, that would be following the same line as Wingspan. And 2 compilations, 2 CD's each would be too much. And the first one would be very similar like Wingspan. I insist, we need a 2-CD compilation, with tracks chronologically ordered, from 1970 to 2008. With the right selection, a big promotion and a couple of new songs (of course, one of them a brand new single), I really think that compilation could reach #1 in the charts (specially if it's released in June...)

From a marketing point of view, of course, you're absolutely right: the Wingspan 2.0 my list amounts to would be redundant and there's no chance such a thing would ever be released; I was just making a pitch for what I'd like to see on a collection covering my favorite segment of Paul's solo career. If you want to do justice to McCartney's whole solo career, I think you need a box set, and if something like that ever turns up, a 2-CD best-of compilation along the lines you suggest wouldn't surprise me at all. Rhino did something like this with their Curtis Mayfield box, People Get Ready: there was the full box, and at least one and maybe two highlights discs extracted from it.
Yeah, Paul hand picked the tracks for Wingspan himself.

I imagine that he always hand picks the tracks. He obviously hates 'Give Ireland Back To The Irish', because it never turns up on anything. Not even the re-issued albums with the extra tracks include it, as far as I can see.
As he's not with EMI anymore, any new compilation may have nothing to do with him.
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.

Which is a strange decision for him to make, considering the most oft criticism made at him is that his work lacks depth.

It's possible that he now finds the lyric outdated, but it didn't even turn up on 'Wings Greatest'. It's possibly the only time, in a song, that he's spoken out on a serious issue.

"Give Ireland Back to the Irish" is on the 1993 edition of Wild Life. Now... it's the same. I guess nobody bought that album. I'm the only album. (Wild Life is aaawful.... hahah)

Same goes for "Mary Had A Little Lamb:" it's an early Wings single that's never turned up anywhere again except as an extra on Wildlife. I could be totally mistaken about this, but I think I remember seeing an early track listing for Wingspan in a magazine that did include "Ireland." Can't remember which magazine, of course.

I don't know why people think the Wild Life album is awful. Its a great little album, just because its not of the same quality as Band On The Run doesn't mean its an awful mess. There isn't one truly bad song on Wild Life.
As for 'Give Ireland Back To The Irish", I actually think Paul loved that song during the early 70s because he always played it on Wings 1972-1973 tours and made a few home videos showing it off. I don't think he puts it on any compilation albums because they already gave Ireland back to the Irish lol.

I like "People Are Strange," "Tomorrow," and "I Am Your Singer." It's not bad. Maybe the mistake was leading off with a couple of jams on side one instead of burying them on side two, which would have been the usual thing to do. It created a weak impression at the start. I used to play the vinyl second side first (starts with track six on the CD).
