Hell, I saw him in concert 20+ years ago and he was a fossil then. Had the cain and white beard with the white suit on. If the beard was shorter, he'd have looked like Colonel Sanders to me that night.
Honestly though, he's a great, great player, and a fantastic entertainer. Just ask the bazillion people he's sat in with. |

Thank you for the rare clips of Leon. Any idea who his band members are?
He looked so radically different when
I saw Elton John open for him
at the Fillmore East in 1970.
It was a tie, though, as to who did a better show that night.
Leon and Elton were both on fire that night. |

on the first one it looks like kris krisstoferson on the banjo...and it looked delaney bramlett on guitar...i found this on a forum elsewheres....That's Leon alright and contrary to many of the youtube comments I think he sounds pretty fine and looks sharp as hell...with the Shindogs...I'm guessing that was Delaney Bramlett playing that Gibson 335 right up close to him wish I could have seen who was playing the Fender (James Burton?)...maybe Steve Douglas on Sax, too. Can anyone name anymore of the many members of the Shindogs? Seems to me both he and Glen Campbell did time with Ricky Nelson also, quite possibly in his TV band along with James Burton. Does anyone have confirmation of that? I used to have a Russell Lee single on Roulette from late 50s or early 60s; I know he recorded under Russell Bridges or Lee Bridges too, maybe...plus all his session work with Sinatra, Gary Lewis and The Playboys (probably him on "This Diamond Ring" ya know), a host of Snuff Garret productions...god there must be a site somewhere that lists all the myriad sessions that he did. I'll bet it is very impressive. and this http://www.tv.com/shindig/show/2198/episode_guide.htmlentry 10... |

That looks like Glen Campbell on the banjo. I'd say the tall sax player is Jim Horn. |

Now, good sir, I do beg to differ from you. My good freinds at Wikipedia have this on the TV show Shindig: "The series house band, the Shin-diggers (later renamed the Shindogs), featured a young Glen Campbell, Billy Preston, and pianist Leon Russell."
I believe the early clips are in fact from Shindig (which would explain Mr Campbell on banjo). Also MR Russell's website mentions a myriad of collaborators (starting with Glen Campebell), but does not include the name Kristofferson.
The Wiki-people tell me that Kris moved to Nashville in 1965 (after resigning an Army commission to teach English at West Point) so the dates seem a little off for him to be playing banjo in LA on Shindig.
Of course strange things do happen. And where was the mysterious Mr. Kristofferson in Dallas in November 1963?
And who or what was responsible for Mr Russell's pompadour? I'd say he's got a got four inches of vertical lift on that thing. You're the contractor, my good friend, tell me how it's done? |

Hey, If there is anyone out there who knows of a good old school R&B guitarist in Nashville please let me know. I need someone for March 21 & 22. There won't be a rehearsal except for the sound check so this person has to be very comfortable in stepping up. Band is a 7-8 piece and plays blues/R&B. Thanks, Joe |

I thought the delaney clip was totally cool. The guy should have been a much bigger star than he was. Bonnie's daughter's doing pretty good these days.
I'll pass Joe's ad around. |
