News from gigwise.com:

Paul McCartney Starts Work On New Album
With dance producer Youth...

Sir Paul McCartney may have got a Lifetime Achievement Brit Award but he’s not finished yet – he’s working on a new album.

Fresh from his headlining appearance at the Brits on Wednesday and last year’s well received ‘Memory almost Full’, the former Beatle has just started recording material for a new release this year.

His spokesperson says, “Paul started recording last week, but he has been writing for a while. It should be ready by the summer."

And McCartney has chosen a surprising collaborator for the project – he’s working with producer Youth at his studio in Icklesham, East Sussex, who is more noted for his work on more upbeat fare.

Would this be the classical guitar album? You wouldn't think so with the producer he's chosen..

"Wings IV introduced Jimmy McCulloch, a spunky lead guitarist with grit, able to spur Paul on unlike any previous soloist. His debut track, the magnificent single `Junior's Farm', stands as one of Wings' finest emotional and technical releases."

"Few people on this planet know as much about Jimmy's musical history than you."

Let's hope he's got new energy as a result of putting this Heather mess behind him-- mentally and emotionally, if not monetarily. I think when she sails into the sunset he'll feel like he can fly!

I guess not. Probably working on different projects at the same time.

I want an album full of songs with minor chords, melodies with a range of at least an octave, one or two key pivots/transitions, and at least 1 or 2 driving bass/drum rockers!

I like the album before MAF (2nd time in a row I can't remember its name) a lot. Even that Brazilian sounding song. It was kind of Beatley.

I love John,
I love Paul,
And George and Ringo,
I love them all!

I just hope he doesn't change just to get better record sales. I don't think the world will ever be ready for Macca to "break it down"

Let's hope he continues with the great material he's delivering since Flaming Pie.
Is the record deal he signed with HearMusic a 2-record deal? Because that was Joni Mitchell's case but I don't remember Paul's.
Maybe Starbucks is pushing him to record a new album very quickly to capitalize after the huge hit of Memory Almost Full, his first US-Platinum studio album in 24 years!

I don't think Starbucks have that kind of clout.

With Youth it could be anything. He collaborated with McCartney on 'The Fireman' albums, and also the 'Liverpool Sound Collage'. But then he's also produced Depeche Mode, The Verve, and Crowded House. I predict a mixed bag.

I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.

I like his old style, not all of this rock-ish sounding kind stuff.

I love Paul, but I feel like he's getting a bit washed-up.  If you know what I mean.  The only song I really liked on Memory Almost Full was "Mr. Bellamy".

How was Paul getting washed up with Memory in your opinion?

Well, I just feel like he's trying to be hipper than he actually is.  The musical style on Memory Almost Full just isn't something he can pull off as well as his trademark style, in my opinion.  I don't expect everyone to agree, in fact I'm probably in the minority.  I'm just saying how i feel.

"Dance Tonight" is a nifty single, and the first Paul record I've taken notice of in a few years now, truth be told. I should probably get to a record store, if any of those still exist.

It's a great little song. His lyrics are often critisised, sometimes rightly so, and these are no great shakes, but it's just a fun, throwaway song, so who needs complex lyrics? It sounds like he made the whole thing up on the spot.

Exactly. Songs are good for different reasons, I think. Sometimes a great lyric carries a tune, and other times the lyric is more or less incidental and it's the sound or mood that makes the thing work. One of the reservations I always had about seventies' rock criticism is that they often had a bias toward ambitious, self conscious lyrics. They sort of forgot that one of the things rock music can do is just make you want to get up and dance. For Paul, I think music is more about creating a sound than any literal meaning in words. For John (and George) on the other hand, it was more about conveying personal (and general) truths as they saw them through music.

Often people forget that sometimes the lyrics are just there as an aid to melody, and not really to be listened to word for word.

I think so. It's taking a literary or literal minded approach to something that's more felt than anything else. It's kind of like asking what the Mona Lisa means or who she is and what she's thinking about. Not irrelevant questions, but maybe beside the point.

I was wondering this morning what this new album might be like ,will it follow on from C&C and MAF with there slightly autobiographical feel , or will he supprise us with an album thats vintage bonkers McCartney that relates to nothing much ? kind of Ram meets Wildlife , Ive got a sneaky feeling it could be the later , think he might just want to have some fun with his music ? What do you think serious Paul or daft  Paul ?

We haven't really had "daft Paul" in a while (that I've heard, anyway); so that perhaps leaves the more "serious" variant. Wouldn't mind hearing some rock 'n' roll Paul, myself: I enjoyed "Run Devil Run."

Songs like Mumbo, Bip Bop (daft ) from Wildlife as apposed to (serious) songs like How Kind Of You ,Riding To Vanity Fair from Chaos and Creation in the Backyard , that kind of difference .

He might tour, too:

Geoff Baker, Sir Paul's publicist and close adviser for 15 years until 2004, is convinced that he will throw himself into his music and will soon embark on a world tour - his last was in 2005. "Music and the message of his songs are what he is about," he said.
