Just curious to see what everybody's thoughts are on Wingspan. Personally, the dvd, book and double cd set disappoints me greatly. I look at what was done with The Beatles Anthology project and then I compare that to Wingspan and Wingspan just...ugh. It could have been the Wings fan's Beatles Anthology but instead it's basically PaulandLindaspan.
Although I have to admit when I first saw Wingspan in May 2001 on tv, I had just gotten into The Beatles and Paul a few months before, I thought that Wingspan was pretty awesome but that was before the obsession so to speak with Wings/Jimmy.
"Wings IV introduced Jimmy McCulloch, a spunky lead guitarist with grit, able to spur Paul on unlike any previous soloist. His debut track, the magnificent single `Junior's Farm', stands as one of Wings' finest emotional and technical releases."
"Few people on this planet know as much about Jimmy's musical history than you."
"I'm Joe English and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland." xD
Basically yay. I dont think it was ever meant for the hardcore or to be a kind of anthology just a hits package with key album tracks so far more a kin to 62-66 and 67-70 than the Anths. So to that end it served its purpose i suppose. And when you look at the track listing theres hardly a duffer on there.
I think though to keep in more in tune with its title it should have been wings singles and album tracks only.
Paul could really do with his own anthology with all the b sides that havent been out on cd and some decent out takes and demos but its a massive project.
Got no complaints about the dvd though, that was wings and lots of stuff previously unavailable on dvd
I guess it just grinds my gears that like 1/4 of the songs that are on the cds aren't Wings but McCartney solo tracks.

I don't have Wingspan (neither the book, the movie or the album) but I think it was a really good project, well promoted, and its wish was to offer a best-of in every sense. So it was pretty nice. It's not an Anthology, of course not. It's just a greatest hits. As the guy from jpgr.co.uk says: "We must wait for the Wings Anthology then!".
I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't eat trash... I work out hard everyday and have a healthy life. And I'm proud of it.

This is true, and like Wide Prairie, it's really Paul's public tribute to Linda. Even Wingspan the album falls into this category- choices like "The Lovely Linda" and "Bip Bop/ Hey Diddle" are in there to make a point about Linda and Paul's post-Beatle family life more than they are for their musical merit. He's entitled to that, of course, but, I suspect, like you, I'd preferred more of a Wings-the-band focus.
