What a blow yesterday was......2 great men have left the rock.....Love Arthurs C's reccomendations that man kick the oil habit. Anthony a fellow Isle of Wighter was also a great inspiration to those whose iives he touched.

Arthur C Clarke was one of my two favorite science fiction writers (JG Ballard is the other). Thank you for all of it, Sir Arthur; you pointed me toward a lot of marvelous things.
Two great men. Arthur Clarke died at the age of 90 and in Sri Lanka, where he lived because he wanted to explore the see and loved diving. I think he had so full life that he passed away happy and peaceful. Bur Minghella was only 54 and that's such a pity. "The English Patient" was a film that shook me and change my conception about love, I'll never forget it. RIP.

Also that he was a self confessed paedophile who liked the place for the easy access it gave him to young boys. From Times Online: "Clarke had allegedly told a newspaper reporter that he did not know how old his sexual partners had been, but that “most of them had reached puberty”. Asked whether it was morally wrong, it is claimed that he replied: “No. I mean, it depends on the country. You can’t have absolute morality.” I wonder if Gary Glitter and Micharel Jackson will pass away "happy and peaceful"?

Sorry mate - it wasn't Mr Minghella I was trying to demean. I thought the questioner was being a bit contrived in their slacker approach - if someone truly didn't know who they were a quick google would have solved the problem. I bow to Anthony's importance and reputation. I hoped the bit about A C Clarke and the monkey books might have indicated I was being a bit flippant. Respect my friend.
A C Carke wrote some books - mostly about monkeys. The other guy made a movie or two.
I can't agree, neither Clarke wrote mostly about monkeys, nor Minghuella made just a film or two. And I didn't know that bit about Arthur sexuallity but really, I don't care. What means to me is the work of the people. In fact if you search deep enough you can find dirty and nasty things about all famous and loved ones. With one exception, my favourite band. That's why I never care about personal details of musicians, writers, artists. Only their work. Beatles are the only solely great exception.

Ok. I WAS JOKING. I couldn't believe no one had heard of Arthur C Clarke. And there are monkeys in 2001 (well primates anyway.) His enjoyment of having sex with young boys won't stop me appreciating his work (not that I'm a sci fi fan) but it does remind me never to make assumptions and never put people on pedestals.
