Mongolia To Erect Monument To The Beatles

From the not-quite-completely right translation:

A monument will be erected to the famous "Beatles" group in Ulaanbaatar city, the capital of Mongolia.

In support of the initiative, Prime Minister S.Bayar attended Friday a news conference called on this matter. Saying that the Beatles launched a globalization process, Mr. Premier told that he has been listening the Beatles' songs for over 40 years.

Standing close to a guitar sculptures of four "Beatles" will be made of bronze. Songs of Beatles and of Mongolian groups and singers will sound all day through. Over MNT 100 million is required for this project. On April 26, a donation concert will be given.

Thanks. I tried linking to this story yesterday, but the page wouldn't come up. Apparently Mongolia is really remote.

I wonder if there are now more Beatles sculptures than Chairman Mao sculptures in Mongolia? Whooda thunk!

I love John,

And George and Ringo,

It's the prospect of Genghis Khan statues going up that worries me.

They have already. He's a bit of a hero. I read a rather flattering bio of him where the (western) author said we shouldn't judge him to harshly for his xenophobic racism that led to the slaughter of zillions - apparently he was just a man of his time doing what came naturally. You know in a few hundred years from now they'll be writing books like this about Hitler.
Meanwhile, ten thousand years from now some archeologist is going to dig up that Beatles statue.....

When I was in college, I had a junior prof in a poli sci class who once argued on behalf on Pol Pot. At first I thought the dumb arse was just playing devil's advocate for the sake of provoking an argument, but he was perfectly serious. Got it all from Noam Chomsky, of course. These sorts of guys will also go to bat for the likes of Stalin and Mao, too: never mind the millions killed; it was all in the service of the revolution; bringing on the new socialist order and the new socialist man; you can't make an omelet without cracking a few eggs- all of that. I imagine if you go to a sufficiently right wing college, you'll find guys there who'll put up nice arguments for the members of their favored pantheon, too, but I can't speak to that.

That's really cool, but why? Is there a Beatles/Mongolia connection that I'm missing here?

I'm an alligator, I'm a mama-papa coming for you
I'm the space invader, I'll be a rock 'n' rollin' b**** for you
Keep your mouth shut,
you're squawking like a pink monkey bird
And I'm busting up my brains for the words
