techno has two meanings -- it's funny -- for europeans they mean stuff with no vocals, really underground "hard" stuff -- for americans, when they say "techno", often they mean what in europe is called "dance".  And "dance" in europe is a lot more mainstream and pop-oriented

for "american" style techno (i.e. european "dance"), the best example I've found is this (itunes link):

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObj.....=Euro+Club+Hits+Vol+

strangely it's called "euro club hits" ... which makes things even more confusing ;

for "european" style techno... i.e. the stuff with no songs, I recommend going to http://www.beatport.com and checking out the stuff in the "techno" section

Maybe only because I was really heavy in the rave scene in the mid to late 90's, to me Techno is just like you said, no words, underground.  And I am in the states.  But I kind of know what you mean becuase sometimes I might go out to a club and they say the music is techno but its stuff you hear on MTV. Commercial garbage they try to pass off as techno.

This makes me think of Kraftwerk, who intrigued me as early as the mid-70s. They started out strictly instrumental but eventually worked lyrics into most of their stuff as the years went on. Very imaginative and catchy.

'...In the name of Preverti, daughter of the mountains, whose embrace with Rani made the whole world tremble...'

there are so many different variations of dance and techno now like house, funky house,hardcore,trance...... i was little bit of a raver a few years back,

Dance music tends to be just like a pop song but with a heavy electronic beat and synthesized bass and has the progression as a normal pop song verse chorus verse chorus..... and can var with lyrics form full song to just a line here and there and isn't usually too fast maybe 120-140 bpm ( rough guess )

techno is much faster and tends to have maybe one or two lines repeated over and over and the bass drum tends to be right at the front of the mix with the bass to give it huge beat

i found this it breaks dow nthe whole eletronic music movement since the 70s http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

I used to be Dave Rave in the early  90's , the clubs i went to in Manchester , Leeds ,Ibiza and Amsterdam played a lot of Techno dance music , it was mostly European and never chart music .
It was very fast and you needed a pill  to keep dancing all night especially in Ibiza , i remember tracks like Disco Biscuit , Voices of 6th Avenue Call him up and Lost tribe of the lost minds . Little wonder i'm a pothead now , but i had a really great time for a good three year , until my health sufferd , i went from a stocky 14 stone down to just over 10 stone and thats not a healthy look for an almost six foot tall man , glad i'm older and past such things now

Ahhhhh good times....
I should post some of my raver pix... kind of scary LOL!
I always wanted to make it out that way to a rave but I was young and didn't have that kind of money *sigh*
Did they have candy kids over there?
Do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell??
I used to be a candy kid

Seriously, I would probably have thousands and thousands of dollars in my pocket right now.  Money gone... spent on overpriced tickets to dance in sweaty nasty warehouses and mind altering substances.

Candykids might have been an american thing only.  The would wear alot of beads and wings and have glosticks and glitter and bright glo in the black light colors and carry around teletubbies and other children toys.  Yes I know I should not be admiting to this LOL!

And the same thing happened to me, met my current boyfriend about 7 years ago and quit the partying and the drugs.  And I am grateful.  Your body can only take so much abuse. Although I still have a weekend corona with lemon habit...

Too old for all that, thank God. The worst I could do in my day was set fire to the grass under the tree where I fell asleep smoking it!

Funny, someone comes onto a Beatles forum, posts once - about techno - and doesn't come back!

I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.
