So the question is, how come, suddenly in late 1966, all four Beatles suddenly grow moustaches? Does anyone know if this was a calculated image thing? A shared attempt to get rid of the Hard Days Night image? Or did they all just turn up in the studio one day going "bloody hell, you three had the same idea as me"?
These facial hair questions need answers, anyone fancy providing them?
PS When Paul showed playwright Joe Orton the Penny Lane record sleeve, he said they looked like "anarchists in the early part of the century". I think Orton's onto something, they do go with the Edwardian feel of the era (Sgt Pepper, Bonzo Dog Band).

heres a quote from a book i read...
"His [Pauls] new mustache sparked much comment and all the Beatles would soon follow the trend. The decision to grow facial hair had prosaic roots, hoever: he sustained a split lip after an accident."
Love the Beatles, and all shall be right.avatar created by freakchic
"Love is the answer, and you know that for sure; Love is a flower, you've got to let it grow." -John Lennon
" I don't work at being ordinary." -Paul McCartney
"The Beatles saved the world from boredom." -George Harrison
"So this is America. They must be out of their minds." -Ringo Starr
Well, that could be true. Remember Paul in the "Rain" and "Paperback Writer" videoes where he barely opened his mouth to sing because he had a "major" chipped tooth from a skateboard accident, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

A skateboard accident? Remember this was 1966. His tooth was chipped in a accident when he crashed his moped on December 26, 1965. It left a scar on his upper lip, which may have resulted in the growing of a moustache. Though it could have just been that it was the fashion at the time!
I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.

^^^^^Thanks for the correction. I knew it was something like that......
there was a section in the Anthology book about when one grows a moustace, then the others do, i suppose to keep a bit of a trend going. certaintly by Pepper they all had moustaces! it is funny how they all seem to grow beards & long hair at the same time.
It's been a Hard Days Night & i've been working like a dog!
I thought it was to rebel, because Brian wanted them to look clean cut and proper, so when they were getting "more mature" in their music they said to hell with rules and grew mustaches.
not sure where I heard that, could be wrong,
Looking through the bent backed tulips to see how the other half lives.
He would have needed more than a moustace to diguise himself. i heard that he thought that the people in India woundn't know who the Beatles were & wouldn't reconize him, but they did.

George grew a moustache as a disguise when he was travelling to India in late 1966. He didn't want to be recognized, but I doubt if it really worked.
You're correct. He lasted one day before a bell hop recognized him.
Both George and Paul grew their mustaches for specific reasons: George for disguise (as Ravi Shankar had suggested-- also that he cut his hair, which he did, and neither measure worked); Paul because of his moped accident. I suppose it became the trend later, but as far as George recalls, one day they all had "hair breaking out on the face". They didn't plan it as a group.
All you've got to do is choose love. That's how I live it now. I learned a long time ago, I can feed the birds in my garden. I can't feed them all. -- Ringo Starr, Rolling Stone magazine, May 2007
For all I know, Ringo might be a yogi disguised as a drummer! - George Harrison
If Paul chipped his tooth in December 1965 why didn't he have it capped by May 1966 (the promo video for Paperback Writer/Rain)? In the history section of this site their is no mention of the moped spill.
It's one of the few things that The Rolling Stones didn't copy off The Beatles during that period. Though hang on, didn't Charlie Watts have a 'tache briefly?
