"dummies" would be me.
seriously.
i've been listening to them for a while but i still don't understand some parts of their songs.
no i'm not stupid. it's just not my mother tongue and i still can speak english better than most people i know.
anyway.

i have a lot of questions, i hope someone answers. please?
first question.
in love me do, when he says i'll always be true.
does it mean that he'll always be honest or that he'll always be there for her? [or something else, maybe?]
OK, you can laugh if you find this funny but i seriously want to know.
i'd appreciate any help.

This is a good question blackmath .
English is a funny old language , with one word often having several meanings .
I'm an English speaker and i sometimes find it difficulte , i think the use of true in this case is like true love , and not true in the sense of honest .

[i'll be asking more questions in the future, i have a lot of them.]

I think as English speaker's we take for granted that these songs will be understood by everyone .
I've never even thought that people would have to use an English dictionary to understand the lyrics , that sounds like home work .
But now we have this thread you can ask and one of us should be able to help you blackmath.
Were are you from ? i'm from England

home work? believe me, i use dictionary everyday to understand things all over the net. well not everyday now, but i used to do it two years ago. i'm really much better now. and i know almost all of the words they use in their songs [especially their early songs, haha] but sometimes they use phrases i've never heard before, what am i supposed to do then?
another example.i have no idea what roll over beethoven means. i just imagine poor beethoven rolling on the floor. but it probably means something else.
i'm half turkish and half persian.

I've always interpreted as meaning he'll always be faithful to her. He's reassuring her that she's the one. He found "someone to love." Cuz really, he's begging her to give him a chance. Just my take on it.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

I think Roll Over Beethoven means "He will be rolling in his grave " , Rock 'n' Roll would be a shock too Beethoven so he would be rolling in his grave with the wild sound
It's quite a funny image , mind you so is Beethoven rolling around on the floor

This is a really cool question
It just mainly depends on how you interpret it, how you want to hear it.
To me, that line meant he'll be there for her.

I thought Chuck meant for Beethoven's record to "roll over" off the needle so that the Rock and Roll Record could be on the table.

thank you everyone. it's interesting to see that all of you people have a different opinion.
[now i'm confused even more.]
hey here's a new one.

"come on and work it on out" in twist and shout.

EDIT: twist and shout is a very weird song and probably has no meaning.
but i'm still curious.

"You know you got me goin' now" ?

I`ll always be true means i won`t look at any other girl and will stay faithful to you, love only you.
Roll over B. means turning in his grave, being disturbed from the eternal sleep. You are right!
I ve got a question: What is funny papers? And why funny papers?

As the song is about Apple's lack of cash at the time, I assume it's legal documents.

I just want you to reassure him - talk to him, make him see the error of his ways. Then I'll hit him.

Are you sure it`s "come on and work it on out"? Maybe, "come on and work it ALL out"? Which means - find a result, a solution to something, or - to exercise to become fit (less likely). That makes sense. I will listen to it carefully tomorrow or just check the lyrics.

To call on smb means to drop in on smb, to visit smb, and never to phone smb. To call on smb to do smth means to ask smb, to urge smb to do smth. I think so.

Hey!

this is not about what the lyrics mean but about the lyrics,
what does it say at the beginning of hold me tight?

it feels so right now?
that's what i used to hear. till i saw in a lyrics site "it feels alright now".
so which one is true?

I always thought it was 'feels so right now'

You really got a hold on me I think was just another way of saying 'i love you.' Its like, the person is dependent on that particular person, they feel that they need them - You really got a hold on me, I love you and I need you and dont go and so on and so on.

IMO -

"Leave you flat" -- I'll leave you all alone, and you will be sad, and I don't care.

"Green" - envious.

"You Really Gotta Hold On Me" - I can't get you out of my head.

Hi Blackmath -

^^ You're welcome !

"There is one love, I should never have crossed" - to me that means that he had a love, he did bad things, and as a consequence he no longer has that love, and it hurts him badly, and he realizes it.

Also for the "leave you flat" - using the word "flat" sometimes connotes something that happens very quickly, like "you can count on me, Mom,  I'll be back from the store with the milk in no time flat". So maybe John was also saying he would leave her very quickly.

BTW - these are just one guy's interpretation ... I think John's choice of word imagery was probably well calculated to be somewhat unclear - maybe more naturally in the early days, but certainly more so in the later days ("Come Together" is a good example in my mind). I think he was toying with us!!

Anyway, more learned and esteemed members of this forum can help here too. Especially Harihead, she is a writer and editor!!

I'm not sure if this is the part you mean, but I think he says "I say girl ... yeah now girl...". Does it sound like this is the part you are referring to?

By the way, don't worry about other people not answering recently - folks are very helpful on this forum, I'm probably by coincidence the first one to see your posts after you post them - I'm sure they are ready and willing to help if your post is not answered quickly, or if I stumble

Is it the part right before he says "Bye bye baby bye bye"? If so, I think he is saying "I say bye!", just before that. Maybe put a link to the song and say what time it is (or find a youtube of the song). If it's worth it!

"get through"= "make you understand."
"trying to get to you" = "trying to make you understand" or "trying to show you what I mean."

It's another Jane Asher song, in all probability: think of "I'm Looking Through You,"  for example.
