Maybe try listening to the 1999 remix on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack: it may preserve some instrumental details that got lost in the original 1967 mix.

I remember reading about Jeff Beck's strange weekend with Moon in the bio. His affinity for the "tan girl" sticking out to me the most. I don't recall him saying Moon was kicked out of the Who. I think this was during one of their many down times and Keith couldn't stand the time off. So Beck was basically trying to steal him away from the Who. But, I just skimmed the article, so if I missed that part, I'll try to read it in more detail later. Great article and I haven't read the book in a while.

Like this part:
Those 2 days you were in the studio, was it work?
"No, there was not an ounce of work in it. It was like “I’m going to amaze these bastards up in that control room NOW. Not tomorrow, not in an hour, but NOW. One-two-three-four..." there’s not an inch of wasted tape. We didn't deliberate, we just played it through. There were no tapes, though jimmy and I had worked out some stuff at his house before. I remember Townshend looking daggers at me when he heard it, because it was a bit near the dark. If you turn that up loud it really is quite impressive. He didn’t want any one meddling with that territory at all. I secretly wanted to take that element away from the Who, and I wouldn’t have minded if there had been other drummers aspiring to that style but there wasn’t, there was no one could hold a candle or even imitate him.Until Cozy Powell came along. He was a young tearaway with a double bass drum, and that’s why I grabbed him. Keith didn’t have a hi-hat."

I've always loved that Keith hated Roger's singing. He as so off there! Most fans can't go on enough about how amazing Roger's voice is! Maybe he was jealous. I think Moon always wanted to have that talent.

Ah, I didn't see the quiz. Seems like they had a lot of tension in that band. Probably where all the aggressive stage antics came from. Although, I can't imagine what John could have done to be kicked out! He seemed like such a laid back guy. Townshend might be more of a diva than we know.

I haven't found anything about John's departure yet. But I found other fascinating tidbits which I love. Such as:

In the mid 1960s, Entwistle was one of the first to make use of Marshall stacks. Pete Townshend later remarked that John started using Marshalls in order to hear himself over drummer Keith Moon's drums, and Townshend himself also had to use them just to be heard over John. They both continued expanding and experimenting with their rigs, until (at a time when most bands used 50-100w amps with single cabinets) they were both using twin Stacks with new experimental prototype 200w amps.

Wonder if that's what started them on the way to making it into the Guinness World Book of Records as the worlds loudest band!
