Which of these two albums do you prefer? Lots of people have said that they believe they could have been volume one and volume two.
I personally choose Rubber Soul. It was the beginning of new and fresh musical ideas. And it has my all time favourite song, In My Life, on it.

50-50%. I voted for Revolver.

Revolver with no doubts for me! It has so many great songs... Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, I'm only sleeping, love you to, here, there and everywhere, yellow submarine, she said she said, good day sunshine, and your bird can sing, for no one, dr. roberts, i want to tell you, got to get you into my life, tomorrow never knows.
Geez, i guess i named all of the songs from Revolver. They are all so great!

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CANNOT choose!!!! I am far too wishy-washy...like choosing a favorite friend or child!
Partly too because I've heard these things for nearly 40 years, so my perceptions are all screwed up (you do tire of some songs here and there).
Sorry. I know I've let you down terribly. :(

i like rubber soul it is the completion of the metamorphisis that they were fully into in revolver....if you can dig what i'm saying...

To me Rubber Soul is the beggining of their adulthood. Songs began to evolve from the r'n'b rock'n'roll songs they used to make. There are still some songs which i could include in the "early stuff" category, but there are also some that have a "new" sound.
Revolver is completely "new". That's how i feel when i hear. It's their "metamorphosis" completed to qoute pc31. I wonder how people felt about this album when it got out on the market... there was no song on it that could be compared to an "early stuff" song.

i know brain wilson of the beach boys must have hated it cause it dwarfed pet sounds and has often been said to be what changed rock and roll and took it into a new direction.

Rubber Soul, definitely, because it was their breakthrough album, artistically speaking. From that album on, they had more independence and could do more things as individuals, like George getting into the sitar.

I went with Revolver. Besides it being my favorite beatles album, I feel that it was a completed version of what Rubber Soul started.
Posted by: The End, March 1, 2004, 1:13pm; Reply: 11
Sorry, I couldn't vote! There is nothing to choose between them I reckon - they are BOTH brilliant (apart from What Goes On and Yellow Submarine - sorry Ringo!)
I think these are two very different albums though - Soul is more acoustic and Revolver is more electric. My two all-time favourite tracks are on these albums too - In My Life and Tomorrow Never Knows.
I'll take them both :)

I can't imagine the one without the other. Rubber Soul marked the beginning of the Beatles experiments, and Revolcer was the obvious continuity, culminating with Sgt Peppers. No when it comes to the album, i just can't say i prefer this than that. They're
all good and they all mark a milestone in their musical path.
And as a second thought, i'd like to add that Rubber was the first one recorded on pot.
See the Lennon 'Rollinig Stone' interview.

Personally, I'd choose the Rubber Sould album since the songs are more upbeat even though the lyrics could be downer than the actual music. I tend to like their songs that have good sense of vibrations, because it rubs off on you. "Run for your life" is defintely my favorite on there. The way John strums his guitar on it is favorites of mine.

as i expected the two albums came very close one to eachother and i will not be surprised if Rubber soul will take the lead.
Cheers!

It's weird because John Lennon always hated this track - I think it was because he lifted the first couple of lines from Elvis's Baby Let's Play House (I think it was that track!). But I agree with you, it's a great album closer :)

Revolver....this Beatles classic rock album is their true psychedelic masterpiece creatively, musically & artistically with Tomorrow Never Knows as the standout track more so than Sgt. Pepper & MMT ever will be.

I believe that Rubber Soul opened the door...but Pet Sounds kicked the door in and broke the hinges. Also I doubt that Brian Wilson cared too much about what the public thought about Pet Sonds in comparison to Rubber Soul...had he wanted to blank the Beatles in the public's eye's he could have simply released a song about surfing and getting chicks...i like to think that he was personally much more satisfied knowing that he had created the most beautiful album in the history of rock and roll...even if only he and Paul knew it.

That's basically the whole deal there. It's Rubber Soul, but with more complex arrangements and craziness like "Love You To", "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "I'm Only Sleeping".

Although Ive heard many people say they find Rubber Soul and Revolver could be Volume 1 & 2.... such claims hold no foundations with my own ears :)
For me, Rubber Soul is the ultimate Beatles Album.
Such a claim, obviously needs explanation..(or defence..on such an edgy forum :) )
When looking through the chronological order of the Beatles Albums... the fresh contemporary trend which is absorbed through Rubber Soul symbolises the blossoming imaginative streak that the Beatles adopt..striving into the matured sixties..very much apart of the movement they helped to push into the mainstream.
Its this commercial yet underground feeling that Rubber-Soul Offers; a blend of doped up moods mixed with the rapid realisation of music entering a phase which will transform goals and push boundaries.
I feel Rubber Soul offers a soothing, soulful and more graceful listen, while Revolver is sharpened by the electric riffs and singing styles.
Although rough naive concepts..I see Rubber Soul as the Dope Album...and Revolver as the Acid...the simple characteristics can be clearly seen in attitude and edge. This does not decide which is better, as it is merely opinion, but Rubber Soul..for me..has a very forced style..Something which totaly grasps me..even after the 6000th listen.

Wow, how difficult this is! They're both my favourites, and for some time I couldn't decide on any of them. But, if you force me to, I think I like only a bit more Rubber Soul, and this is only because of the song "Norwegian wood". But if you ask me the same question again tomorrow, I'd say "Revovler", so...

I voted for Revolver. I actually like every song on Rubber Soul and there are several songs on Revolver that I can't abide ("She Said" and "Tomorrow Never Knows"), but the other material on Revolver is so strong, it makes up for that. It's close for me, though, especially since I favor a more acoustic approach which is prevalent on Rubber Soul

The music on some Rubber Soul lps starts with "Baby You Can Drive My Car" On the "Canadian " version it's I think "I've Just Seen A Face" that changes the whole feel of the lp! Rubber Soul is a collection of great standard "Beatle songs" Revolver is much more experimental and shows great growth in the Beatles song writing so I am going with Revolver!
Posted by: Indica, October 31, 2004, 6:06pm; Reply: 65
Rubber Soul is the starting block for the Beatles moving into a more abstract-felt music.
For me, Rubber Soul is alot more defined.
The American Version is pretty poor, with the interpretation changed by the bloody labels.

I think the Beatles were infatuated with American westerns at the time they recorded Rubber Soul! The I"m Looking Through You" has a country sound to it as does "What Goes On", and "Run For Your Life" This was their "Americana" Lp for all intense purposes! Their departure into a drug induced "Revolver" lp signalled a new phase in Beatle direction which culminates with Magical Mystery Tour so "Revolver" gets my vote!

Anyway, I agree with much of what's been said here. Rubber Soul was the beginning of their transformation, Revolver completed it.
Revolver has a certain harshness which I like. There are a couple of quiet tracks on it, but even Rigby is pretty harsh. The strings seem to scrape. It is not the gentle chamber music of Yesterday.
Taxman
Rigby
She Said
I'm Only Sleeping (very abrupt opening)
Dr Robert
AYBCS
Tomorrow
I Want To Tell You
It's got to be Revolver

Hi everyone,
Im sure this has been mentioned before but
I recently bought the CD versions of Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt.Pepper to build up my collection, but the sound is really poor.
On many of the songs (especially Rubber Soul and Pepper, Revolver seems better althoough I might be imagining it!) their voices are very low, hardly audible. Norwegian Wood sounds almost like an instrumental. Its really annoying when put on shuffle and one of these songs comes up.
I used to have the CD version of Red Album and from what I recall all these songs sounded fine on there.
Does anyone know where I can get a decent sounding copy of these CDs or atleast enlighten me as to whats going on!
thanks,
Tony

Revolver for me. Elanor Rigby, Love You To, Tomorrow Never Knows. It was the start of something big

rubber soul. I just couldn't get into revolver.

Revolver. "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "And Your Bird Can Sing" are two songs I still love to crank up. "Here, There, and Everywhere" is the emotional flip side of "I'm Looking Through You," and a wonderfully direct song. :)

This is actually a pretty easy choice for me (Revolver) as great as most of the songs on Rubber Soul are there are a few songs I think of as duds (What Goes On & Run For Your Life in particular... Wait isn't too great either.)

'Revolver'. Both are great, but 'Revolver' is just the bettsr album.

At first I would say that Revolver is better just because I think of it as a better album. But if I really think about it, when i listen to Rubber Soul the mood I'm in is also so great and the album flows on perfectly in my opinion. Every song is great (except Wait is ok :X). I vore Rubber Soul.

I prefer Rubber Soul because there are a lot of songs in the a;bum that can really make me jump and shout, especially Run For Your Life and Drive My Car.

I'll have to say Rubber Soul, it was the first album that I bought along with Abbey Road. Although I love so many songs on Revolver, like Tomorrow Never Knows, Got to Get You Into My Life, and god, Here, There, and Everywhere is one of my favorite songs ever! I guess it's a really tough pick now. But Rubber Soul has some great ones too, I love I'm Looking Through You, that puts me in a great mood every time I hear it. I also love In My Life, Michelle, If I Needed Someone is one of my favorite George songs!

This is a really difficult choice. Just like choose between your mom and dad! But if I really have to choose one it would probably be Revolver.

you're going with DAD!
I would say mom

I was watching the Anthology the other day and recall George saying that he said Rubber Soul & Revolver could be like Volume 1 and Volume 2.

^ I definately could see that. Actually, doesn't Yesterday...And Today have a mix of songs off of Rubber Soul and Revolver.
Both of those albums both show the progression from their own progression. From the image of pretty clean cut (I know, not exactly right but I can't think of any sort of better term) to their LSD days. Actually hasn't Rubber Soul been considered their "pot" album and Revolver the "LSD" album?
