Which of the above movies do you like best?

A Hard Day's Night captures the spirit of the Beatles & Beatlemania itself back in 64 in all its glory.

Let it be is not on your list.  More of a docudrama but a hard day's night would be my choice here.

I was going to put Let It Be on the list but like you said, it's more of a docudrama.

I adore 'A Hard Days Night". I have lost track of the number of times I've watched that! It is just so classic and takes you back to Beatle Mania at its height (so younger fans like myself can experience that). Help is also good for a laugh, but I prefer AHDN.
Posted by: misterchaz (Guest), March 13, 2004, 4:34pm; Reply: 7
AHDN is classic cinema and groundbreaking in its use of handheld cameras and the faux reality of their lives.  A fake documentary if you will.

The movie just conveys the joy of youth and music and the Beatles so well.

MMT is the dregs, followed by LIB.  Yellow Submarine is great, original animation and stands on its own even without a lot of Beatle input.  Help! is very good as well but compared to AHDN a lesser effort.

Still, fun Beatley stuff!

There are extras on the DVD's but the only deleted scenes available are "You Can't Do That" from AHDN and "Hey Bull Dog" from YS (this was deleted on most versions of the film).

There are some great featurettes on the DVDs though. Help!, MMT and LIB are not available on DVD as yet although Help! and MMT should still be available on VHS which features trailers from the film.

It wasn't that "they" didn't "let" the Beatles use their own voices. "They" would've given their eye-teeth for real Beatle voices.

It was the Beatles themselves that didn't want anything to do with the film. It was a "contractual obligation" thing. Later, when they saw what a quality job the animators had done, the Fabs agreed to do the film sequence at the end, and be more visibly associated with the film.

I wonder if it would have been possible (when they were all alive of corse) for them to make a version with there voices. they could have put it out as a collectors item or something.

I always heard that they were just too busy and travelling too much to actually do the voices. Ria's response makes the most sense and i'm sure its right, but its just another little tid bit that I should have known and didnt.

A Hard Day's Night
Yellow Submarine
Magical Mystery Tour

Help!

Help! is really popular with some people I've met....I don't really understand it's appeal....it has some decent music videos, but the humor and the band's effort is a big letdown when compared to AHDN.

i like AHDN but it is cheesy and Help! is more like a regular movie.

I think Help! is funnier than AHDN for some reason. It's just so stupid it's funny. I love AHDN too, but it takes itself a bit more seriously. Help! is like one of those great campy movies. But I think the one I've seen most is Yellow Submarine. That has to be the best non-Beatle involved movie. I love it. Magical Mystery Tour is horrible. They're barely in it! Hey, why isn't Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the list! Bah Hah!! Just kidding. Aerosmith did a cool version of Come Together though.

yeah, I forgot about Billy Preston. I can't remember what he sang though. Maybe I am the only one who saw it!! That's part of my Beatle obsession. If a movie has the slightest thing to do with them I have to see it! I'm even ready to watch Cheaper by the Dozen because it has a cover of Help! in it that I'm curious to hear.

Help! is a great movie, everyone has seen a hard day's night...or not. I saw ahdn first, then I saw Help!. AHDN captures the spirit of the 60's, but Help! is funnier. AHDN was a movie with 'in-jokes' (if you know what I mean). I really didn't understand the scene where John says this 'She looks more like him than I do'.

A Hard Days Night is still my favorite followed by Help! then Yellow Submarine, Magical Mystrery Tour and Let It Be. I might also add that Let It Be can be almost painful to watch at times. Sad  :(to see a  the group implode.
Posted by: Rowdy, July 4, 2004, 3:59pm; Reply: 41
Yeah, Let It Be is undoubtedly the worst....it's so depressing.....Magical Mystery Tour is next in line because of the nonvideo segments dragging on forever most of the time....I can stand the other three films though, with AHDN and YS being true classics.
Posted by: Janice, August 9, 2004, 10:34pm; Reply: 42
Well, YS bores me after awhile (I hate to say), I haven't seen MMT in over 6 years and I remember it being really weird, and I haven't seen LIB, so that leaves AHDN and Help!, but I gotta go with Help! (tough decision!!)... there's so many little stupid things in it that make it hilarious. I love random humor! When my computer starts, I have the sound of the part where Ringo and John are in the elevator play:

R: What was it that first attracted you to me?
J: Well, you're very polite, aren't you?

lol.

Help has that colourful sixties tinge to it, and obviously the budget has been upped,  with flash effects and a wide-range of settings.
The Beatles didnt care much for the script or making a film, and were seasoned pot-heads by the time of filming. Although this attitude comes across strongly, I still think there are good moments...but compared to A Hard Days Night....it just looks like another Pine-Wood Studio's throw-away.
A Hard Days Night (apart from being in Black & White..a huge cult/cool factor) the script, settings, and stereotyped roles are all balanced with a fantastic soundtrack. Its moulded a perfect semi-fictional/realistic portrayal of the Beatles as a group and individuals, and has more of a northern theme running throughout.

Saying that, Magical Mystery Tour is good for what it is, and although some scenes are just too surreal to be classed as entertainment, its a great chapter in the Beatles Career.

Yellow Submarine (considering the Beatles input..is nearly zilch) has a clever and witty script, a very styled dark approach to animation and just some original creations. I really wouldnt say this film is aimed at children.

Hard Days Night gets the Vote.

It's very difficult to decide ona  single film, becasue for me AHDN and Help are both great!! I've chosen Help becasue it's in colour and JOHN is soooo gorgeous. I love seeing him wearing jeans. Mmmm.

AHDN was nominated for an oscar but didn't win it. I think Mary Poppins did. Well, I'm not sure about that, I just know that it was nominated but didn't win the Oscar in the end.

Nominated for Alun Owen (film script original)
Nominated for George Martin (treatment of music)

I think Hard Days Night is better, because of the Black & White (cheap Budget) decision.
Just has that defined characteristic, an instant cult recognition.
Plus, I love the Script.

The Yellow Submarine Film I always feel is Underated.
Its a Pyschedelic Masterpiece, updating Alice In Wonderland, into a 20th Century conception..one that is alot more darker..and 'fab' :)

Kind of ironic that ;D

The BlueMeanie vote goes to...

A Hard Days Night. Has to really. Wonderful movie, brilliantly directed. An historical period piece.

Also always had a soft spot for MMT. I remember watching it on telly the first time it was shown. I was 9 I think.

A Hard Day's Night baffled me the first time I saw it. The accents, the slang, the cultural differences from America-- it was hard for me to get. But I studied LONG and HARD study study study which was grueling but I somehow managed it with the four Beatles running around being adorable. Then I decreed it the bestest of movies and still do.

Help I immediately liked on first viewing, except for the fact that they were all stoned. I just hated those red, puffy eyes. I wish they'd stayed on pills! They were much more up when they were wired. Also, they were working hard in HDN, clearly trying to make a good film, whereas in Help they were coasting. I still enjoy Help, and it's got some great scenes and songs. But it falls second to HDN.

YS can't compete simply because it's not the guys, although I agree it's a classic in its own right and has some terrific, creative moments.

I've never seen MMT, except for a few scenes that people have posted on YouTube. I'm afraid I'm not any more fond of LSD than I am of pot affecting the Beatles' acting. Where are the German waiters with the prellies when you need them? Send them to England, fast!  ;D

Ha! It captures the era better in black and white, I think. Whenever I think of that period it's always with thoughs of classic British movies of the time, always in black and white. AHDN would not be right in colour.

It definately gives it that documentary feel, which makes it feel much more authentic than the normal glossy star vehicles rock movies tended to be in those days. Imagine if they'd gone the Elvis/Cliff route and had the band play characters. I think the whole concept was a stroke of genius and fundamental in creating the whole JPG&R thing, which so aided their climb to fame. Blah blah blah.

Whenever I'm stressed or sad, I just watch Help! and it takes me on this humorous, light-hearted adventure  :)

Hehe, yeah, when my sister and I watched it for the first time, we laughed so hard during the "toilet scene"! And we still do! Whoosh, no sleeve. Whoosh, the entire shirt disappears, (but the collar stays!)  ;D

I also really like the Ticket to Ride scene... Ringo having an argument with his miniature snowman... awww!  :) And the You've Got To Hide Your Love Away/fight scene part is also great.

By the way, AHDN comes an extremely close second place (love this movie too), then Yellow Submarine, then MMT. I haven't seen Let It Be Yet... :B

A Hard Day's Night is just so classic early Beatles. I love it to death. :D Help! was very funny as well, but the plot made it more silly, less realistic from how they would actually behave, I think, and I've heard it said in many places that they enjoyed doing AHDN more.

It's a bit difficult to tell as it's blurred. I would have guessed German, but the German version was called 'Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!'.

Some of those words could be Swedish, and a few could be Dutch. Bobber? Yoost? The Beatles were always called Die Beatles in Germany anyway.

help is the best movie ever...  ;D i enjoy and love them all, but it's like choosing the favourite beatle... it's hard because you can't really compare the movies... they're all really different and deserve the "best" somehow

favourite comedy? help
favourite mockumentary? a hard day's night
favourite flower-power movie? magical mystery tour
favourite animation movie? yellow submarine

difficult... very difficult.

I really love Magical Mystery Tour. I remember seeing it on TV when it first came out. But it's a made for TV programme, so that's why I voted AHDN. Love Yellow Submarine too, but you probably realised that!

Hell, they're all good!!

Let It Be still causes bad feelings. We wont see it until everyones passed on.

Favorite Beatle movie : AHDN because it ostensibly captures Beatlemania at it's height. According to some
sources (maybe disreputable), Lennon supposedly scoffs at the film as being a phony representation of what really went down in the hectic early days (implying of course that the debauchery was downplayed)--EVEN SO, it's a delightfully funny film w/ great acting and a marvelous Alun Owen script.

(favorite ALL TIME film (i know, off topic, so sue me) is "A Clockwork Orange" because I'm a Kubrick fanatic.but that's another story)

That's crazy talk! It's amazing. You're missing out if you haven't seen it.

I voted 'AHDN' even though 'Help!' always entertains me just as much. I guess there's a certain place in my heart for that first real good look we had at these guys (beyond their stage performances, that is).

:)

I showed this girl I was babysitting Yellow Submarine, and she absolutely loved it. She was like... 3 years old.

^ I've heard that after the Yellow Submarine movie, kiddies would ask Ringo why he pushed "that button" (lol) (lol)

I like Yellow Submarine quite a bit! :)
My favourite is still Help! though, I absolutely love it ;D

Why DID Ringo hit the button? I mean, Old Fred said to not push the button. If the captain says don't push the button, don't push the friggin button! I'm pretty sure the captain knows his own submarine by now that you can trust him enough to not push the button.

Oh, when I was at Ringo's concert, I should have made a huge sign saying, "Why did you push the button, Ringo?"

Maybe it's just like with him and levers... maybe he's also a "born button-pusher"  ;D

.... I'm not going to name names, but *someone* is getting *very*, *extremely* jealous right now...... (and that someone is... me ;) )

For some reason I prefer Help! than AHDN.

From the bits I've seen of the movies (I've been YouTube stalking, the quality isn't that great) AHDN made me feel more like I was in the middle of Beatlemania than any of the others, which is a good thing seeing as I was born 25 years after they had broken up. But Help! was really cute too, I loved the Ringo part with the laser...

Did we ever discuss why Let It Be isn't on here?  We probably did, but I didn't look through all those pages. Too Lazy. ;)

I think a lot more would like MMT if they started taking LSD.

^ ... or LSD backwards! ;D

Yeh, actually, Let it Be is the only one we don't have at home (because we can't find it being sold anywhere), so whenenver we feel like watching it we use Mr Youtube ;) To be honest I like the other movies better though...

I love "AHDN" the best.  Hubby is a fan of "MMT."

I know it's too late now, but I think "Let It Be" should have been included in the poll...   :-/
