More info!!! I REALLY do have to get this!!!
Story VS Performance - The 1993 Director’s Cut of Anthology focused primarily on the Beatles story, using performance footage only to enhance the story. The final version would remove much of the story and details to include as much TV and concert footage as possible. At the time this appeared to be the best approach, but in retrospect opinions may change after hearing the uncut interviews; this was after all their one chance to tell their story. Collectors have countless sources for the TV and concert footage, but only one option to hear their story as done for the Anthology series, until now that is!
Uncensored Version- comparisons between the two versions of Anthology clearly show heavy editing. An entire sequence regarding Yoko Ono and her effects on the band has been cut-down to almost nothing; only on the 1993 version will you hear unedited and sometimes unflattering comments. Many interviews did not even make it to the Anthology book. One example is George commenting on the positive experiences he had with drugs, including the famous dentist real name!
The 1993 director’s cut also includes the original extended sequence on George’s songwriting later trimmed at George’s request. It becomes obvious by program 1 what you are seeing is what the director and production team assembled and presented to the band before they made numerous change request.
Program Beginnings- Each program begins with an unused animated sequence in place of the Help! Introduction.
Some of the Detailed differences found on Anthology Director’s Cut 1993:
Different edit of 1960 home recordings, does not have tape spool run out
Greater details on Pete Best and his staying out all night with strippers
Different German tour montage, uses alternate footage and includes “Sheila” in the medley.
Unused sequence creating the move from Liverpool to the recording studios at Abbey Road.
Greater details on the their early influences
Greater details on early tours, John Gentle, Discoveries etc 1963
Unused segments regarding the “From Me To You” and “She Loves You” singles
More comments on the ‘64 tour and police, Ringo ‘The police were very good to us, they used to steal pills from the kids and give em to us’
Segment on Derek, Paul ‘ it was very hectic being the Beatles publicist, Derek became a raving alcoholic’
More details on why Derek left in 1964
Different shots used during the 1964 tour montage
Different re-creation of fans room. Different camera panning and differences between color and b&w.
Rare interview with Jimmy Nichol and The Beatles upon arrival in Holland
Alternate edit of 2/64 return to England interview, using US photo inserts between questions, an idea later dropped
Alternate intro to “Kansas City” from Shindig! Footage does not project on wall
Unused segment about salaries with George telling stories of Brian’s contracts
More details on “Tomorrow Never Knows” and its recording process
Different montage for Revolver Lp cover
Neil, ‘they never practiced their Revolver songs for tour
More details on the origins of “Yellow Submarine”
Neil on developing the “Two Virgins” photos
Derek on meeting Yoko and kissing her on the head
Comments from Paul, George and Ringo on the music of “Two Virgins”
Ringo comments on the burying of egg shells in India
George tells story about “Hey Jude” being written for Julian
More details on the Getback/Let It Be sessions
No crowd ambience on rooftop performance
Greater details on the Paul/George riff

I hear you. From what I've read, Paul and George really let loose about all kinds of things, Yoko in particular, that were edited out. This seems like a must have. There was a great review of it in Beatlefan magazine a few months ago. I was kind of skeptical about it until I read the review, but it says mainly what you posted Al. Thanks.

You'll certainly have the 15 DVD mega-Anthology collection. I looked on Ebay earlier, and I think it was at $58 U.S. with about an hour to go. Not unreasonable by any stretch. Its going to take you a while to get through 10 DVDs, but post even if you've just gotten through a few and let me know what you think of the quality. I can't wait to get your feedback 'cos I'm sure I'll have to get a copy.

This isn't an authorized release, that's why. Its a bootleg from hell, but one worth having.

Yeah, I know it's unofficial, but that's just what I'm talking about. There's this wealth of material that NEVER sees the light of day! Just like an official DVD release of Let It Be! I feel like I'll be dead before I see that. They've got tons of stuff they could put out and it would sell like crazy. I don't get the big wait. It's been almost 40 years already. Oh well, I guess that's what keeps them fresh. I mean, they MUST know what they're doing seeing as how they are still the biggest band in the world after all these years. I'm just greedy.

You aren't greedy, you're being pragmatic. You can tell from the Anthology series that Shea has been remastered, Washington has been remastered, 'Let It Be' has been remastered, Budokan, and so forth. So why the hold up? They should put out the concerts in a DVD Box Set and make a ton of money. God knows the bootleggers on Ebay are making a bundle. Unless there are some inner workings with copyright or Yoko or whatever, it just doesn't make sense.

Blimey, what else arrived yesterday? Rutles 2, that's what!
So basically the whole of last night was a massive Beatle-fest!
After watching The Rutles (more of which another time!) I settled down to watch the first 3 discs.
The opening scene is a composite picture of the four Beatle's faces - and it looks very weird - no wonder they scrapped it! Then the familiar In My Life segment is used as the intro - not Help!. To be honest, there are FAR too many differences to list - the main differences are the interviews - much more from George and much less from John - George even remembers the name of the person he bought his first guitar from!
Paul obviously re-recorded a lot of his answers in another interview, notably his comments about From Me To You - his original responses are included here. There is also much more on the departure of Pete Best, including why he was out so late every night with an... ahem... stripper... ahem!
The interview dialogue from the guys often overlaps, so George finishes a line of a story that Paul started and vice versa. I thought that was quite a nice idea because it removed the feeling that The Beatles didn't want to be in the same room!
Another great idea is the story-telling - obviously, people remember things in different ways and bits get missed out or skipped and that's exactly what happened here... we are told the story of their first few singles, Love Me Do, Please Please Me and She Loves You, then George says 'hang on a minute, what happened to From Me To You?'. The videotape then rewinds back and the story is told at last!
It's nice to see Mal Evans get a greater mention including some nice footage of him 'playing' an anvil during the Let It Be sessions!
OK then, now to the quality of the DVD... obviously this was a work in progress and the some of the vintage clips had yet to be EQ'd, cleaned and framed correctly, the sync numbers are also present - but that aside, a lot of the clips look and sound great, especially the recent interviews which have great picture and sound quality.
Of course, a lot here has already appeared on the video and DVD releases, so it wont be for everyone, but personally speaking, I am VERY glad I purchased this set and I can't wait to watch the other 7 discs!

No, its Erskine4. They have some cool stuff like a 2 DVD set called "Beatles By the Bushel" with 67 promos, and one of Macca with all his promos. I hate to ask, but how did you end up buying this for so much $$? Your BeatleChas is selling the "Director's Cut" set for $46.00 US.

Because I am SO rich I don't have to worry about what I spend. NOT!!!!!! LOL ;D
I dunno really, when I checked there were only a few people selling it and he looked the most reputable of the bunch. It was an auction rather than a 'Buy Now" and I actually got it a lot cheaper than what the other sets went for PLUS he checked in a copy of Paul's Superbowl show, which I hadn't seen! So I'm pleased.

This is sad to say, but I bought this last year and I still have not sat down and watched it. Alan is there any one paticuliar part I should watch first?
Posted by: The End, September 27, 2006, 11:50am; Reply: 31
I think the vast differences are probably in the earlier episodes but there are so many anyway! Check out 1966/7 where George describes his first experiences with LSD - it's hilarious, and obvious why it was cut out of the regular release!!

Does Paul say on one of them that he imitates John for Free as a Bird or did I see that somewhere else? I want to watch it again, but I can't remember where it was that I saw it! Anyway, I thought it was pretty cool. The fact that he could mimic John's voice. Probably why a lot of people think it's John doing the Ahhhs on ADITL.

"Now available for the first time ever - The complete, original 1993 director’s cut of the Beatles Anthology!
The beautifully packaged deluxe 10-DVD box set includes detailed liner quotes, full color brochures, high-quality video transfer, special features and a custom storage box complete with new Anthology artwork.
Highlights and Alternative Segments Include:
Story VS Performance - The 1993 Director’s Cut of Anthology focused primarily on the Beatles story, using performance footage only to enhance the story. The final version would remove much of the story and details to include as much TV and concert footage as possible. At the time this appeared to be the best approach, but in retrospect opinions may chance after hearing the uncut interviews; this was after all their one change to tell their story. Collectors have countless sources for the TV and concert footage, but only one option to hear their story as done for the Anthology series, until now that is!

Program Beginnings - Each program begins with an unused animated sequence in place of the Help! Introduction.
In My Life Opening Montage - Programs 1-4 use this song montage with the commercial version using it only to start program 1. The early montage contains different shots from the final version including Allen Klein.
Flashback Montage - An early idea was to begin each program (beginning with program 2) with a flashback montage covering important material seen in the previous program, this worked well for the first few programs, but unfortunately took too much time, Beginning with program 4, the flashbacks only went as far back as the previous program
While My Guitar Gently Weeps Montage - Ideas about the montage were changing by program 5, and no song montage was used for this program. For program 6, a different approach/song was used, and for the first time it was flash forward montage, using much footage not seen elsewhere in the program. Programs 7-8 drop the montage idea entirely
Quality Of Archival Footage - At this early stage, Apple had to use what footage it had available with quality varying from poor to ex. Some of early TV appearances and newsreels are obviously taken from VHS screening tapes, and many include time-code. Some scenes contain the text “Temporary Picture” All of the new interviews and Apple owned material, including footage taken directly from the original cut of “The Long And Winding Road” look great and contains no time code. It is quite interesting to see what Apple’s film archives looked like in 1993. In 1995 Anthology producer Chips Chipperfield hinted at what this early version might look like when asked why they could not just use the original 10-hour version for the home video release “We can but that’s off-line. Off-line is a rough cut. It’s cut from whatever archive sources we have so a lot of it is VHS
Unused McCartney Interview - Programs 1&2 include an unused interview with Paul. This was the first interview shot and used before finally being replaced with a re-recorded Paul in black turtleneck With this first interview being re-shot, the stories vary from the final release
Partially Unused Harrison Interview - For most of Programs 1&2, the only Harrison interview used is the control room interview with George sporting a moustache. More than ˝ of this interview was later removed and replaced with a re-recorded clean-shaven George. With much of this first interview going unused, the stories vary from the final version
Unused Neil Aspinall Interviews - For most of the first two programs, we see Neil’s first interview sessions wearing no hat, the stories heard vary from the commercial version.
Derek Taylor - Derek has a larger role in the early version of Anthology, and is featured in numerous unseen interviews
Program Endings - An early idea was to end each program with a sequence showing the progression the band was making. Examples would be an overhead view showing the move from Liverpool to London, or the move from London to the US.
Audio Outtakes - It is important to note that the 1993 Anthology uses very little studio outtake recordings. There are no created studio sequences of audio outtakes. We don’t hear any real audio outtakes until the 68 studio sessions, as the audio outtakes were still being examined at this early stage of production and were not made available to the production team just yet. But… we do get to hear the unused “Hums” ending for “A Day In The Life” along with part of take 4!
Early/Abandoned Ideas - The 1993 Anthology uses many ideas later modified or dropped entirely. The recreations of fans rooms differ greatly; TV and tour montages were created then later dropped. An early idea was to show the move from Liverpool to Abbey Road studios, done by filming an entire trip-sequence taking you from Liverpool and ending at George Martin’s door in Abbey Road Studios. Other early ideas put Paul in the film “The Girl Can’t Help It” Various other unused segments appear throughout the entire eight programs
No Closing Credits - At this early stage, none of the eight programs contain closing credits
1993 Ending - At this early stage, the documentary ends with the “Let It Be” sessions and rooftop concert. Program 8 part 1 dates from December 1993. 1994 would alter the Documentary considerably, with the three remaining Beatles reforming to record new music and joint interviews. It was at this point; the 1993 version was heavily re-edited leaving only a hint of what it had originally looked like."
