I'm kinda partial to "Rock'n'Roll Music" at the present, but heard "Twist and Shout" on the radio today.
Whatta you think?

Why the hell does there always have to be a poll on these things? Can't you just ask what is the best John cover song? I'm going with 'Baby Please Don't Go' off of 'Sometime in NYC' minus the Ocean Child from Hell's banzai banalities.

Twist and Shout may even be the greatest Rock vocal EVER. :)

Yeah, Twist and Shout is an easy choice, although I do like Money also.

All of these are great - but dig up Anna - and check out his vocal in the chorus! What a voice he had...

Money, Anna, Baby It's You, the Smoky Robinson songs, they all deserve to be on the poll. It's a shame the "Rock'n'Roll" album didn't come out better. I haven't heard the new release but can't think it's much better. It's just an exercise for him by the mid-70s. In the late 50s to mid 60s he was singing like his life was hanging in the balance.
Which I guess is a good way to sing rock-and-roll.

twist and shout
Stand by me is close as well

"Stand by Me" is interesting because it shows the frailty of Lennon's once powerful voice--it's an amazing performance of vulnerability from a guy who could belt out "Twist and Shout" and "Money" in his early days.
Heartbreaking really.

Nobody votes for "Slow Down"? Not the best song ever, but his vocal is killer. Pure balls.

yeah...and I think the Macca rival to this was Long Tall Sally...Paul does
his version of a killer vocal here (IMO)

Where's Mr. Moonlight? Not my favorite song but John's vocals are great. Words of Love is also amazing. Is it just me?

yeah, the way John sings "mistahhhhhhhh ah ah ah ahh Mooonlight" on that is C-L-A-S-S-I-C ^5

I figured "Twist and Shout" would ace it so I voted for my next fave, "Stand By Me". When I heard each of these songs for the first time, I immediately wanted to play them again. :)

it's funny how people love Twist & Shout but Lennon always said that he thought he could do the vocal better,
because of his sore throat! obviouly it was kind of right that he had that sore throat. :P
Posted by: HeatherBoo, May 14, 2008, 12:16am; Reply: 40
I don't think it would have been as good if he didn't have the sore throat!

Yeah, baby, I'm with you on this one ... AWESOME vocal, one of my favorite Beatles songs to listen to!!
BTW, do you have any idea what he is saying in that third verse:
You know that I love you, tell the world I do,
Come on pretty baby, why can't you be true.
I love your
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX baby oh so bad,
The best little woman I ever had ...
I always figured it was something dirty, and then when I heard him leave that verse out of the BBC version I thought that even more, but who knows, it might just have been one of John's "I forget the line so I'll just scream louder" moments!
