this has probably been done, or something similar. but i was just wondering where you were when you heard the news of his death, now that i'm finally getting into his solo stuff.

i wasnt into the beatles then, only a few more months and i would have been, but i remember my 8th grade history teacher was like a HUGE beatles fan, and he had like an entire section of wall above his desk was devoted to the beatles with pictures and a few newspaper clippings about George. but i never knew of him or cared much when he died. kinda wished i did now. same goes for John. :'(

I don't remember what I was doing as I wasn't a Beatles fan at the time, but I was looking through some very old magazines last year, or the year before, and they were talking about George and how he was going to have a speedy recovery. It was pretty depressing.

I was at home ... it was very early in the morning (it all happened at night here in Europe) and I realized about it seeing TV news ... they didn't stop telling us about the details of his illness and his bio ... all the day and next night, specials included, of course ... it was very sad, tho we -the fans- somehow knew it, not exactly the day, but we were awared of it ... the first thing I did was to send a message to my bandfellow, who was in another city by that time ... I didn't cry, -if you want to know that- ... too deep sadness to even feel tears on the surface ... I spent the next week composing one song in his honour ... this last year I composed another one trying to copy his unique style (when I read that Macca thing about Friends To Go) and I think I get it ...I consider it the best one I've ever composed. I'm one George fan if you didn't notice. This year is the 5th anniversary ... some news coming, I guess ...

I heard it from CNN or Fox I think. I don't remember if that's the exact moment I heard it, but that's what I remember. It wasn't a huge shock, because he'd been sick. Then they had the whole George Martin thing, so people were sort of prepared for it to happen.

This is a very sad topic for me, but I still remember almost every detail of when I heard that George had passed away. I woke up with an upset stomach that morning and I didn't hear that he passed away until I got to school that morning. My high school librarian that I worked as a volunteer library page for told me that George had passed away and I almost went into shock. :'( I had to force myself not to cry at school all day that day, but when I got home, I just let it all out and cried all night. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( I was depressed for nearly a month about when George passed away and all I could do was think of him. Kids at school made fun of me just because I love him very much and that depressed me even further.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Even my grades had slipped after all that happened. But I managed to bring my grades back up in time for report cards.

I try my best not to think about the day when George had died. It just upsets me. :'( I miss George very very much. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I got up, turned the TV on and went to have a shower - then the phone rang and as I reached it it stopped ringing - and then I heard the news headlines.

I was absolutely gutted. - I always believed he would be OK and make a full recovery.

I carried on getting ready but the my family and friends kept ringing.

I was very late for work that day.

A horrible sad day when I bought every single newspaper again.

Alan, about the Newspaper thing. I can totally understand. I would feel so horrible just buying evry paper announcing his death- but then I wouldn't feel loyal if I didn't. It's weird because I had a dream about this last night.

Yeah, I did exactly the same when John was killed - but I was only 14 then!

That's weird about your dream!!!  Spooky! :)

I heard about George passing away on the radio while driving back to my office after a hospital staff meeting.  WCBS FM played Beatles and George Harrison songs for 24 hours.

In an Indianapolis hospital visiting an uncle who had almost died from a anuerism. I still have the Indianapolis Star news paper from that day. It has a really cool picture of George from the Cavern days, black leather and  black Gretch guitar..... :'(  Very sad day indeed.

Good to have found this topic.
I was at home, I prepared myself to go to the cinema with a good friend since it was a day-off, I was about to put some make up on. I turned the radio on where they played 3 George songs. I had a bad intuition and switched to an other station where the news was on. When I heard "At the age of 58..." I knew what had happened. I was shocked, I screamed "Noo! It cant be happening!", and ran downstairs to my mom and cried "Mom! George died!". I cried and screamed for hours.
It's still a very sad moment in my life... :'( :'(

Can you imagine that it was almost 5 years ago??

Well, i was 8. I was going to my school and in the tv, i listened "El ex-Beatle George Harrison ha fallecido a la edad de 58 años.."...(The ex-beatle George Harrison has died at 58)...i wasn't a beatlefan, but now i am.
Posted by: harihead, January 19, 2007, 6:25pm; Reply: 19
I wasn't a big Beatle fan at the time either. I had read lots about the group after the Anthology series came out, and I got the videos and a few books. George was far and away my favorite member based on that initial viewing, and everything I read about him subsequently only reinforced that this was the Beatle who resonated most for me personally.

The weird bit was that I was flying to Spain 2 days after his death. We had planned a 2-day stopover in London, and I had two things on my list: see Baker Street and see Abbey Road studios. What I really wanted to do was see George's house, but that seemed too much like stalking to me, so I just decided to see what I could when I was in town. Besides, if I went to his house, I knew I'd be hoping for a glimpse of him. See what a rotten fan I was? I didn't even know he was ill, and not in the country at the time.

Anyway, I believe I found out the news the day before I got on the plane. I felt very sad, but this raised an Abbey Road visit to extremely high priority. My brother-in-law and I went that first night. The people at Abbey Road paint the wall around their property white, so fans can scribble on it. The wall was covered with tributes to George, flowers, candles, pictures, poems, on and on, all the way down the sidewalk. I walked along very slowly reading and viewing the messages. I took some pictures, which I'll have to find again.

It was very solemn, but also uplifting. I could just feel the love. I still can, when I come to forums like this. We are so lucky-- all of us in the world. Of all the people to be raised to this frenzied idolized status, it happened to be four very level-headed down-to-Earth men who were determined not to let success go to their heads. They honestly did try to do the right thing, in their personal lives, in their business affairs, certainly in their music. They could have become such monsters, but instead they held true to their course and tried to maintain their personal integrity. I think that's why they are still loved today. People recognize and respond to that goodness, both in their music and in their persons. I am very grateful for who they were and what they gave us.

One more note about George. I was reading in I, Me, Mine his write-up about how the holiest gurus can pick the time they will give up their bodies, and that this voluntary removal--accepting and embracing death when it comes-- is one of the most advanced spiritual states you can get, to avoid rebirth and having to work through your mistakes all over again. I'm relieved that George got to go mindfully; he knew it was coming, he was prepared, he was very peaceful. I think it was a state of grace for him to die in his preferred way; he had certainly earned it. Bless you, George, wherever you are.

Thanks, Raxo. I had a marvelous time in Spain. We had friends in Madrid who acted as tour guides for that area; really wonderful. We nipped down to the Alhambra  and then down to the coast by the Caves of Nerha. Great trip but not nearly long enough. Do you live in Spain?

We were going somewhere, I don't remember where. Anyway, I was so sad and my friend had the "1" -album I had given her for her birthday. I asked if we could play 'Something' before we would leave. We did. Makes my eyes teary even now.  :'(

I was at home, and the news was on the TV. BBC News 24 switched over to BBC 1 or BBC 2, can't remember which. But it was good to see that the BBC could honour George by doing that. It was coverage on it all for several hours. The BBC's journalist Peter Sissons was interviewed on it, because he was at school with George. He said that when he was working with Channel 4 News, that one day George called him up with this great news story - PEACE! Sissons said that it just wasn't possible to run a story like that, but he said that it was typical of George that he would say something like that.

I felt truly sad at the news, and felt some nostalgia over the whole Beatles phenomenon.

Well, I just changed my avatar message to PEACE!

:'(Unfortunately for me, I'm only 13 now, so I heard about it a couple years ago (I wasn't into them at the time, that's why I didn't know.) I remember... I had asked my dad something like, "where is George living right now?" and then he told me that he had already passed away. I ran, locked myself in the bathroom, and cried for hours. A week after that, I got my first B (an 89) on my report card. It was a really sad time for me, and what made it worse (like becky said) is that everyone made fun of me for liking the Beatles... and it wasn't like they only made fun of me once, they made fun of me daily. Even now, they do this. I don't think I'll ever quit liking them though because they changed my life in a positive way.... I mean, who cares if I'm not popular in school now because I listen to them, right? Gosh, I really wish I could go back in time to meet George, I wonder what he'd be like .....  :-/

I remember hearing the news of George's passing on a
friday morning (which was 30th nov 01) .
I got up & switched on my tv on in the bedroom & sort
of had the sound done. then i saw pics of George & people
talking about him. I wandered what George was up to now as i
didn't know at that point. Then at the end of the news report, came
up a pic of Geogre with the line 1943 - 2001. I felt so shocked
& coundn't belive it. I knew he had been ill for some time & it
wasn't unexpected, but it was still such a shock.
The rest of that day was awful for me, i lost one of my heros, or was he
a friend. I've never felt such a loss & i never knew the man.
I wasn't even born when John Lennon died so this was all new to me,
no other band had such an effect on me as the Beatles!
Other people didn't seem to understand why i felt so bad as they were
not beatle fans. I felt like a part of me had been taken away.
It was strange because i was re-discovering his music during that time and
realised what an underated talent George was.
I was ill with a great depression after a while but it was nothing to do with
George's passing, but what helped me through that was the Brainwashed album.
As soon as i got hold of that album for christmas 2002, my life was felt so
much better & i realised George helped me more now than he did before.
For all the ups & downs in my life, George & his other 3 pals helped me
through life.
I don't think George (or even John) realised how much they were loved by
so many people & how much they gave!!

Remember, it may seem like you're at school forever, but it is only for a relatively small portion of your life. Then when you leave school I guarantee you will meet other like-minded people. Plus there is the internet - back when I was a kid I TRULY didn't have anyone else to discuss music with! You have friends here :)

yes, i know that its sad.

But now every year in anniversary of that sad day i pray for Georgie ...
Its very difficult day for me.
But normally on ordinary days when i think that h is not on this world any more, that he is somewhere else ... it makes me so sad that i nearly always cry (the same is witch Johnny)

^^ yeah they can. I remember during my senior year of high school ( just last year lol) I did a report on John and I used the radio broadcast the night that John was shot and I almost cried while listening to it and I played the Working Class Hero music video and afterwards my friends came up to me and said "Boo hoo John Lennon is dead. Who cares?" the same kids who teased me about George's death ::)

john's death which upset me at school. i felt so angry & these
people knew nothing of him or his music.
and another time i was at school around the time Linda passed
away & i got all the awful jokes.. >:(
I think as life goes on, they'll realise what they said & feel bad about it.

Saying that, i did get one or two guys into the fabs & i felt so
proud. they had no idea of all the 'gear' things in store for them! ;)

Very true, Andy.  Steve Martin said something like this recently; I can't remember where.  He said that you can really enjoy outrageous humor when you're young.  After you get older, you start knowing people who've died of cancer, car accidents, and so on -- and it gets so you just can't laugh at it. There's too much of a personal cost involved.

So True. I remember feeling sad though, but maybe because he was already sick it didn't shock or freak me out. When John was murdered, it just didn't seem possible or real and it really freaked me out.

I was at school and a teacher who knew I was a fan said"did you hear the news on George?" I said "no what news is that?" "he died" I was shocked and stunned I'm not really a huge George fan but was really upset about it. The teacher allowed me to walk out the class and go for a walk around the school. During that day I recived lots of txts saying I'm I alright etc and in the afternoon I wached a tribute programme to him. 2001 was a bad year in June my comedy group The Giggles disbanded, Sept 11th then George.

I can't remember what I was doing or how I felt. Maybe I just thought his time had come and was relieved he hadn't died violently like John. I didn't know that he never really recovered from the stabbing attack. At the end of 2001 I was trying to keep afloat a foundering high school teaching career and that was sucking up all my energy, so maybe the full impact didn't hit me at the time.

I'm really sorry for those at school who were known to be Beatles and/or George fans, and therefore were given heaps of grief by stupid and cruel people. George's death was such a tragedy. He had so much more to give.

It was a really cold day out and one of the first that year that we had frost I getting ready for school and when i got into the car which was heating up i turned on CBC and it was the start of the morning news and they started off by saying George had passed on and i went to school in absolute shock the entire day as i had not a month earlier really began to listen to ALL of the beatles stuff in a big way and really grasp their personalities.. the next day i stayed home from school and the music channels on TV showed all his videos all day and several Beatles videos namely Real Love and Free as a Bird.. and it held me the whole day.. i was happy sad.. grief stricken i was going through it all... and just awestruck at how sublime his music was... that day was a really hard one

Its something I don't really like to talk about, but here it goes anyways. I was only a bout, I was 9, I just turned 9 that September. We just got done putting up the Christmas tree, because my mom liked to put it up pretty early back in the day. And I just sat down on the couch and it just came on.

I don't even know how to explain how I felt. Because I felt nothing, I was littrally numb. I just screamed for my Dad to get in here because a Beatle just died. He was pretty much in shock, he unlike me do to me being 9, knew that he was sufferring from cancer, but he was still devastated.

I didn't cry for the longest time after that. I think the first time I cried was the next year when Concert For George aired on tv, and it just completely sunk in that he was gone. That was probably the worst night in my entire life, I never want to feel that way ever again.

I remembering hearing about it on the news.  I was a Beatle fan at the time, although not quite as much as I am now.  I just remember thinking how sad because he wasn't even really that old and should have had alot more time on this earth.  I went to work and talked about it with some co-workers who had lived through beatlemania and they were all pretty sad.  For them it was someone who they grew up with, he and the group were a part of their lives growing up and now a peice of it is gone.

I like to believe George is somewhere resting and at peace.  As we all know he was a very spiritual man, and I feel that since he knew he was sick and that the end was coming, he was able to leave his body the way he would have wanted to. I think he was at peace with it.

Well for some background information, I had just started to like The Beatles in the fall of 2000 with all those Beatles' 1 commercials being aired and all.  So within the next few months I fell in love with them and borrowed and listened to whatever I could get my hands on.  I remember a few months before he died my dad told me while were on the way to school that George wasn't doing too well and had cancer. At that time (I was still 9) I didn't think much of it thinking he'd pull through it.  When he actually died my mom got the Abbey Road CD and played in on our home stereo to wake us up that morning rather than waking us up by alarm clock or whatever. It was really beautiful, I still remember hearing "Something" while waking up for school. I wasn't sure what happened: I thought my mom was just playing it just to excite about the middle school dance that evening.  Then my mom came to my bed and broke the news and told me that the newsman said to play "Something" in rememberence of George's passing.  At that point you're way to numb to cry or anything it just went over my head. I had breakfast and went to school like any other day.  My mom subbed at school that day and told everyone in my class that he died and everyone knew I was such a huge fan.  I put on my brave face and acted like I was cool and everything.  That night on CNN before I got picked up to go the dance, I watched a George Harrison tribute and then I just collapsed and started to cry before the television set.  My mom tried comforting me and getting my grandfather to talk to me on the telephone (that part I don't understand) but it wasn't enough.  I pulled myself together once carpool arrived for the dance and some how I remained stoic but told everyone that today was a rough day for me since George died.  The next day, I went to a Georgia Bulldogs American football game (for you non-Americans) and they were talking about George and playing "Hey Bulldog" and "I've Got My Mind Set on You" I just quietly cried to myself on the way there. I know this is so long but it's kind of kathartic for me to talk about it. I've never really recalled that day in such a long time.  God Bless George!

On a Saturday morning, later, like around 10 or 11, turned the TV on in the kitchen to CNN and there it was!!!  I knew George was very sick.  This I have seen on some news/entertainment shows.  So really it wasn't that huge of a shock to me.  I think the time he got stabbed in the back by that intruder at his home may have brought on more complications with his health.  But still, I was thinking, "Two Beatles gone", and cried softly.........

I agree with you Andy.

I was just in so much shock, because my Dad didn't tell me he had cancer, even though he knew. Probably because I would have went crazy if I knew there was a chance he wouldn't be here anymore. Because he was The Beatle I singled out since I knew who The Beatles were.

But now that I'm older, I still get sad because I miss him. And I know I say this a lot but I honestly can't put into words how I feel about him and how i feel about him not being here anymore. I tell myself he's better off now, and one day I'll ( and the rest of you) will passover and coexist again in the spiritual world and be on the same plain sort of.

So, I miss him, but there is no way I would want him back in this crazy world!

I was a bit too young to fully comprehend the situation but I did cry a little. I wasn't a huge Beatles fan, only being five I think, but I was very sad when he died. My father was glum for awhile; I think George was his favorite Beatle. But then again, I cried for anyone who died, whether it was the ant I accidentally stepped on or George Harrison. I was a sensitive little kid.

since i wasnt a big fan till recently, and i was only a little kid when he died, im ashamed to say i was clueless about his death. no one actually told me he was dead, and i think i just kind of figured out over the years that they couldnt ALL be alive, so it was more of finding out who was still alive rather than who was dead......but now i regret being too young and ignorant to mourn him when it happened.
