I think the things Bill says can very well be true. I can't imagine Stu being such a bad player and he surely must have improved during the endless Hamburg nights. And what about Brian Epstein saying he had never heard of The Beatles before he went to the Cavern? The story of the boy coming to his shop to ask for My Bonnie? Bill's version is believable. Hi, I'm new to this forum.
Happened to see this Bill Harry thread and thought it might interest people to see the posts we made in our strictly Brian Epstein forum regarding the same subject.

Hey Bobber!
I shall try to get over here to DM's if I've got something substantial to say ~ my contributions will mostly Eppy-centric, though.
:)
Brian needs so many more people paying attention to his legacy than he's had for the past 40 years. To me and others in my growing group of Eppy lovers, Brian's life is actually much more fascinating in so many ways than his Boys' lives.

I'm constantly trying to flush all the other Brian admirers out of the bushes, so to speak! They're lurking here and there all over the world, but unfortunately most of the ones my age aren't internet-savvy. However! I'm finding many more young people who love Brian than ever before ~ they just haven't had the support of each other until I started searching them out.

It's funny, but I'm not very good at short forum posts... mine end up looking and feeling more like magazine articles. That's one reason why, in forum posts, I tend to provide links to some other sites (such as LiveJournal) where these "articles" I've posted are much more in line with the format.

Let me know if that's all right, and if it's all right to stick a little "Fifth Beatles Movie Forum" banner at the end of my posts like a sig. First I've gotta figure out how to translate my html into the strange code used in forums (with the brackets instead of < and such) ~ I can't find a tutorial on the web or usenet groups on how to do that! :B If I'm gonna be successful running a purely Brian forum I'd better find a place to learn this stuff.

I like to think of our Brian movie forum as being complementary and not competition to the main Beatles forums on the web such as DM's, since the Beatles forums all persist on calling him merely a "fifth Beatle" or "the Beatles' manager," etc.

However, I have found that you all want to know more about Brian, too. So I want to pop in from time to time if that's all right. I guess I'll always have to post within the "Fifth Beatle" category, though, unless the subject matter leans toward being more Beatley than Briany.

It's just that when I post it will almost always end up referring to Eppy. ::)

:D Yes, I found that site in 1999. Since I've been an Eppylover for 40 years, one of the first things I did when I got on the internet in 1998, as you can imagine, was search for Brian Epstein. Finally this Martin Lewis site appeared and I was surprised and pleased.

However, since the push for Mr. Lewis's Rhino Rediscovery re-issue of A Cellarful Of Noise died down, it seems he has also lost interest in Brian. Maybe promoting the book was the main reason he created the site, I don't know. Kind of sad.

Now that work on producing the movie is well underway, things seem to be looking up again for Eppy. :D

Here's another link that you might find interesting:

Sam's last statement in that section, proving that he's a great guy:
"Animosity shelved, Brian and I shook hands for the last time. Eppy had became a Rock in the Beatles career. I was content being a stepping stone."

I'm sure he's also more than content knowing he's lived almost 40 more years, too! ;)

I suppose it'll take me some time to get used to using this. I'm not much good on the computer and techno things. I just type of word for windows! This morning I was in touch with an old friend from the Liverpool College of Art, Dave Little, and he sent me copies of the drawings he did on me, John and Stuart in 1958. I'm contacting old art school friends and am going to introduce a Liverpool College of art section in my rockandpopshop site. This morning I also heard from ramona, Scott Wheeler'w wife, to say Scott died of a heart attack. I'm extremely sad. Scott was one of the many Beatle lover friends I made on the internet and although we never met face to face, I really liked him

Hi, Bill. Awesome! Welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry to hear about Scott. That's rough news.

I hope you get on in your computer literacy. It's not bad; once they plant the microchip in the base of your brain, it becomes really easy. Cheers, and good to see you. :)

I did not receive a request for sending his password, but then I'm only a 'member' administrator, not a 'head' administrator like Dmitry and Alan. As they're not much around at the moment, Bill's request probably slipped through. However, I can give him a new password and send that to him by e-mail

Here is one of the items i tried to send the other day. It's a piece I wrote about the Jets, the first British band to go to Hamburg. I'd been in touch with Ricky Richards over the years and he promised to give me lots of photos, contracts and details of their appearance at the Kaiserkeller, and stories of him going ten pin bowling with Stuart etc. Unfortunately, he got run over and killed by a car two yeas ago before he could send me the items. The other day I got a phone call that Iain Hines was in prison. He's the brother of Jamie Hines, who used to be in 'Doctor Who'. I do have a series of articles he wrote for a girlie magazine in the Seventies about his adventures in Hamburg with the Beatles. Fascinating stuff!

THE JETS: The first British rock band to perform in Hamburg. Some of the members were present in the 2 1s coffee bar in London when Bruno Koschmider arrived looking for bands for the Kaiserkeller. Pianist Iain Hines said he had a group and used the name the Jets, which he had also called his previous bands. Initially, it took a few days to put the band together because they had difficulty finding a drummer. However Iain failed to show up at Liverpool Street Station when the group departed on 4 June 1960. They tried hard to find a lead guitarist, with musicians such as Keith Charles and Joe Moretti turning them down. Finally, after a meeting at Chas. McDevitt’s Freight Train cafe they decided to ask Tony Sheridan. The Jets began rehearsing on the boat over to the Continent. They comprised Tony Sheridan on lead guitar and vocals, Pete Wharton on bass guitar, Colin Milander (real name Colin Crawley) on vocals and rhythm guitar, Rick Richards (also known as Rick Hardy) on vocals and rhythm guitar and Del Ward on piano and vocals.
They hadn’t managed to find a drummer to join them. They arrived at the Kaiserkeller at 2 am on 5 June and found the club had a Trixon drum kit. The various members tried to play on it and it was decided that Del Ward, who’d hardly touched a set of drums before, should become their drummer. Their playing times at the club were 5 hours from Monday to Friday and seven hours on Saturday and Sunday.
After they’d played at the Kaiserkeller for a few weeks, Hines turned up wanting to be included in the line-up. Koschmider said he was quite happy with the band as it was, and if Iain wanted to join them, he wasn’t prepared to pay them any more money. The members wouldn’t agree to Iain joining them as it would have resulted in them taking a 17½% cut in their pay, so Iain then went back to London.
They signed a new contract with the Kaiserkeller on 30 June, but were then approached by Peter Eckhorn who offered them five marks extra a night to play at his Bavarian bar in the Reeperbahn. There must have been some pressure applied to Koschmider because he agreed to free them from their contract.
They played their final date at the Kaiserkeller on Wednesday 6 July and opened at the new club on Saturday 9 July.
As the club, which was in a building formerly called Der Hippodrom, had no proper name, they suggested it be called the Top Ten Club, after a venue they’d played in Berwick Street, London.
They initially played one hour, followed by a half-hour break and in the evenings they played from 7pm to 3am. Business had boomed to such an extent that Eckhorn decided to present non-stop music.
During their season there, the Beatles occasionally joined them on stage for a jam and were due to take over the residency at the club when the Jets season came to an end.
One night, when the Beatles played on stage at the Top Ten with Sheridan, Colin and Iain got up on stage with them and the set included a 70-minute version of Ray Charles’ What’d I Say?
Horst Fascher had been appointed manager of the Top Ten and on 6 August Richards joined Fascher on a trip to London to find new musicians. The idea was to form two bands for the Top Ten. Iain Hines was recruited, along with Chas Beaumont, former lead guitarist with the Worried Men.
It was planned that Sheridan would lead a trio, with himself backed by Pete Wharton on bass and Ingo Jones on drums. Jones was a former member of German band Fats and his Cats. The second band would comprise Richard, Hines, Beaumont and Del Ward. Unfortunately, on the journey back the car crashed on the autobhan and Richards was hospitalised. In the meantime, Jones had been sacked and replaced by a black G.I., Tony Kavanagh. Colin Milander had fallen in love with a girl called Antje and decided to leave the group and take a job with a road construction company in Hamburg.
Despite the long-term contract they’d signed, Eckhorn told the Jets in October that he wanted new bands and got rid of them, replacing them with Gerry & the Pacemakers. Wharton, Kavanagh, Beaumont and Richards began playing in the Bambina Bar in the Hamburg suburb of Pferdemarkt, while Sheridan began playing in a club in the Grosse Freiheit, two floors above the Kaiserkeller, called Studio X. On the ground floor over the Kaiserkeller was the well known dance hall where Ivy Benson’s all girl band were in residence.
Colin left the brewery, returned to England with Iain and joined the Echoes, backing various artists including Gene Vincent, Dickie Pride, Vince Eager and Ricky Valance. Later, Iain was to return to Hamburg and become booking manager at the Top Ten. Richards began a new career in cabaret in Germany before returning to Britain. Ward joined an Indonesian cabaret group and Wharton returned to England to run the family business.

vince eager posts regularly at the whirlygig forum bill....i could try to get him over here to discuss this maybe......it is too bad that we can't get the gene vincent or eddie cochran rememberances of those days...i'll bet those were the golden times that catapulted most young liverpudlians hopes and dreams that some day they would be as big as chris barber and lonnie donnegan....being replaced by gerry and the pacers must have been awful...were gerry and his group mods?was that still an issue during the music boom there, mods and rockers??in england i mean...i know the germans were always hard core rockers...

Hal Carter, who died about two years ago, could have prevented Eddie's death. He was in charge of the tour at the time and told me that he was called away to look after some other artists, I think it was Marty Wilde. He said he would have never have allowed Eddie and Gene to get in a car to go to London that night, but would have ensured that they stayed and had their proper sleep in a hotel. After the accident, I believe there was another musician whose car had broken down and he was allowed to siphon petrol from the car after the accident. Also, thed policeman at the scene of the accident was Dave Dee. I'm sorry I really didn't get all the details from everyone concerned, it would have made a detailed accurate history for posterity. But now Hal is dead and I lost some of the other information. Unfortunately, I have had to junk three computers which broke down over the past five years and I now realise that a lot of information, probably a couple of million words, and hundreds of photographs, were lost.

damn the luck...the futher times marches foward the more information we are losing...so now do you see why i asked you to join in on discussions?
ricky did a great version of tell laura i love her but i always thought the original was ray peterson wasn't it?he did corinna corinna...i always dug that song...here is what i found on ricky...
Born David Spencer in 1940 in Ynysddu, in the Sirhowy Valley in South Wales, he was the eldest of seven children. Times were tough, and upon leaving school he tried various jobs before joining the RAF aged 17.

After being discharged, he decided to pursue a career in singing. He signed to EMI and recorded his cover of Ray Peterson's US hit Tell Laura I Love Her, which beat Elvis, Cliff and Roy Orbison to the number one spot.

It was a controversial release at the time, dealing with the death of a loved one. Today the song has been a hit in 14 countries, and has sold over seven million copies. He released several follow-ups, including Movin' Away, Jimmy's Girl and Six Boys, but none of them were significant hits.

Ricky carved out a career singing on the cabaret and nostalgia circuit. Then, following a bout of severe depression and a nervous breakdown he became a born-again Christian.

Today Ricky Valance still performs, singing country songs, rock 'n' roll and ballads.

he lives in spain now and a recent post was made by a young lady...Sue Coley, Costa Blanca, Spain
I spoke to Ricky Valance today (22/3/07). We talked about doing some shows here in North Costa Blanca. He is well, and has been living here for five years. He hopes to go over again to the UK soon to perform. Great guy!
so maybe we will see his name on the marquee soon...
wiki has a nice write up on him too....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricky_Valance

and a gene link too...Postscript: Joe Meek heard the American original of this and recorded not only another version but also a Brit-clone of the answer song, “Tell Tommy I Miss Him”. Both flopped, but Meek wasn’t finished with death songs and within a year would have released the best example ever to top the British chart.

Hey Bill, I met a guy named Larry Kiniff (sp?) a few days ago and he stated that he knew you. He definately has the largest Beatle collection i've ever seen. He also claimed that he was given the rights to 'Ask Me Why', but I cant find anything about that. Larrys a nice guy and i'd like to do an article on him soon, but I just wondered if you know him.

I'm off on a two week holiday. I don't go to Beatle week because I'm never invited. I did do it the last time I was invited which was nearly 15 years ago. Now I don't think I'd bother. There's a point about my books. My first encyclopedia they lost most of my photos and cut 40,000 words out. Then I was given less than a week to check half a million words. With the revised issue they also lost 20,000 words of copy and corrections I made weren't included in the finished book. These things do happen. It's frustrating to correct mistakes and then see the mistakes still appear in the finishede book! With my first book on John Lennon, the publishers charged me four thousand pounds for including publicity photos of people like Elton John and they sent all my originaly photos by mistake to some New York agency and I never got them back. These things happen with publishers.

4000 pounds for Elton's mug, that's awful!

Too bad you didn't use this:
