DM's Beatles forums  /  Ringo Starr  /  Ringo Starr's real name!
Posted by: alexis, June 22, 2007, 1:52am
I just learned this today!

It's not Ringo Starr, it's not even Richard Starkey! According to Ringo, ...

"My real name is Parkin, not Starkey. My grandad was named Johnny Parkin. When my grandfather's mother remarried, which was pretty shocking in those days, she married a Starkey, so my grandfather changed his name to Starkey, too. (I went to have my family tree done in the Sixties, but I could only trace back two generations - and they couldn't find me! I had to go to my family to find out, and even they hadn't wanted to say anything in case the press found out.) "

Amazing!

Thx Alexis...wow, I never knew this. Parkin....hmmmm. I'm so used to Starr or Starkey, it's kinda weird to get your mind around another name.. but no matter what his name is he's still Ringo to us all :)

Oh wow. if it was Ringo Parr there wouldn't be Ringo and his all Starr Band, or something like that ;D

Ringo's late mother was born Elsie Gleave and was one of 14 children reared in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. While working in a local bakery she met Richard Starkey and the couple were married in 1936. Their son Richard Starkey was born on 7 July 1940. The couple were divorced in 1943. Elsie later married Harry Graves in 1953. If Ringo's real name is Parkin, why are his children called Zak Starkey, Jason Starkey and his wife Barbara Starkey? The answer seems to lie in the fact that he named his daughter Lee Parkin Starkey. Parkin wasadded to thename as it was the reintroduction of a former Starkey family name.

because starkeys' grandfather or grandmother changed it from parkin, not his mum or dad...to starkey...this ringo has  related in the anthology book....

it prbably wouldnt. i mean, does that even make sense?

This is faulty logic on Ringo's part. If "Starkey" is on his birth certificate, then it is indeed his "real" name. Parkin would be his family name or what have you. It's like Marilyn Monroe- even though she was born Norma Jeane, her "real name" at death would be Marilyn Monroe because she changed it legally.
Posted by: PaulieBear, May 19, 2008, 10:01pm; Reply: 27
he probably would have named it something totally different.
Posted by: freakchic9, May 19, 2008, 10:07pm; Reply: 28
i don't care what his name is. Ringo is awesome.

This is partly true. Your real name will always be what is on your birth certificate. Regardless of whether you've changed it 'legaly' or not. From that story, 'Starkey' would indeed appear to be his real name.

well seeing how no birth records were destroyed at all during englands bombing by german planes...this seems to have no reason for happening...

When your name is changed legally, you get a new birth certificate with that name on it.

Really? Are you sure about that? I know for a fact that you don't in Britain. How could it be called a birth certificate otherwise?
Posted by: An Apple Beatle, May 25, 2008, 8:35am; Reply: 33
Your right for the UK Paul. I had my name changed legally to my adopted fathers name. You get a deed poll certificate (I agree my name was, will be and I won't use original etc etc) but you don't get a birth certificate.
Posted by: pc31, May 25, 2008, 2:22pm; Reply: 34
here you have to got thru major hoops to change your name....
Posted by: Mairi, May 25, 2008, 2:48pm; Reply: 35
Oh. In Canada, you get a new birth certificate.
