DM's Beatles forums  /  Albums  /  Anthology 3 is the Best ?
Posted by: 679 (Guest), October 19, 2007, 10:35am
Anthology 3 is my favourite album out of the 3 Anthology albums i find it such a great collection  , i think the mix of takes and unreleased tracks is brilliant . Side one is great it's such a good listen ? and side 2 is even better i hear something different  everytime i  play it  ? was listening to  " Come And Get It " this morning and marvelling at Paul's musicianship, what a great song and  all created in under an hour ?
Anyone else think it's the best out of the 3 Anthology albums  ?

For me it's got to be Anth. 1. Especially Disc 1. All that pre-Beatles stuff. Pete Best, Stuart Sutcliffe. What more could you want?

They're all worth having. For dipping in and out of, now and then. Like having good quality bootlegs.

Dave, Anthology 3 holds together pretty well (and I even like all the insipient tracks of #1 --which really brings to light the early "urgency" of their budding career), but of all the "Anthology moments" in the entire trilogy, I must say I love the best #2's spotlight on the evolution of John's "Strawberry Fields Forever"--showing it in all it's phases of creative development in sequential order (from the rough personal tape to the final Abbey Road configuration everyone now knows) Amazing...and historic. It's a high point on the collection IMO

Anthology 2 was & still is my fav of the lot! I remember buying it &
listening endlessly to it! :) I was dissapointed in Anth 1 as i think it
was quite shabbly put together. Anthology 3 is good, but there's better
bootleg's out there, but then again too many! :o

I only have Ant 1 & 2, I still have to buy the third volume. I really want it, but it's hard to find the import now here in Argentina. (I don't want the national edition, the import has a better cover quality!)
I suppose the Disc 1 from Anthology 3 must be great! It's like an alternative White Album!  :)

I enjoy #2 the best.

I agree with you two. The three version of 'Strawberry' are the best of the second Anthology.

I'm on board with you guys here. In fact, I thought that those three tracks weren't enough! My personal favorite from bootlegs is take 25 with just the cellos, horns, and drums.

The second Anthology is far and away my favorite of the three. Great period there with the Rubber Soul through Magical Mystery Tour extras.

Yeah, but there's something really bad about the Anthology 2. I mean, it was the first anthology (and only?... I don't have the 3rd volume...) to include those 'remixes'. For example, 'Taxman' or 'Penny Lane' sounds almost the same as the released versions.
I know the outro on Penny Lane is exclusively on the Anthology 2, but what the hell is the difference in 'Taxman'? Somebody please tell me!  ::)

Quite a bit actually. There are some guitar parts that have not been mixed out. The backing vocals sing 'anybody got a bit of money' instead of the 'Mr Wilson, Mr Heath' vocals. The ending is also very different. There is a 'clean' ending instead of the fade out with the guitar solo.

Yeah, they just made it slightly different, change the backing vocals &
decided to fade it out.

YES, thats it!...too bad this bit wasnt part of Revolver version...it's fascinating but unclear what the thinking processes were behind which take was "acceptable" for the album and which one wasnt. What was considered risque lyrically in 1966 Britain has certainly changed...

Well, I have original 1 and 3, but I think the 2 is the best.
But there are some fantastic stuff on every part of the Anthology.
And of course, some stuff that I don't like.

First, all the "speeches" from A1 I would put on one disc, which would
consist of interesting interviews with Beatles from 60s to 1970
(I wouldn't mix music with speech like they did on a A1.)
I wouldn't put so much takes of one song (One After 909 - sequence, complete,
I'll Be Back - take 2, take 3, Eight Days A Week - sequence, complete.)

The best song on the A1 is And I Love her ("hard" version with),
which I like better than the official version!

Anthology 3

I wouldn't put so much demos on A3 like Happiness Is A Warm
Gun, Polythene Pam, Glass Onion, Junk, Piggies, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Julia...
Instead, I would like to hear more stuff like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Don't Pass Me By,
- stuff more close to the "final" takes but different from them.
Best songs: While MY Guitar Gently Weeps, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Come And Get It,
Ain't She Sweet.

Anthology 2, as I said, is the best. I like fantastic different versions of Strawberry Fields,
Got to Get You Into My Life, Across the Universe, Eleanor Rigby (strings only), You Know
My Name, The Fool On The Hill.

I must say that Walrus, Hello Goodbye and A Day In The Life sound a little strange (or "empty")
without overdubs, but it's interesting to hear, let's say, "half - naked"
versions... (Maybe that's the way Beatles would sound if they didn't meet George Martin...)

The best songs: all the mentioned plus many more like Only A Northern Song,
That Means A Lot...

Anthology 2 has the least demos & the least live versions, so I think that is the
best part of the Anthology.

And I adore the low-down, gritty 'I'm Looking Through You'. Too much fun.

Oh I think the Mr. Wilson/Mr. Heath line is MORE risque, actually naming the culprits!

George's acoustic version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on #3 is downright haunting. Of course, the "finished" version on TWA is indispensible--what w/ Clapton's masterly contributions--but 3's intimate rendering of this latter-day Harrison beauty is the highpoint of the trilogy's final set for me.

I could barely listen to TWA version after hearing the acoustic one. It's just beautiful.

After hearing the one version for so long I find the "new" lyric offputting, but agreed, it's very well done.

I've often though it could have been worked on as an acoustic number. Some really good picking, and maybe a bit of subtle string quartet?

yeah, George did some wonderful demos during that time (All Things Must Pass &
Something are so beautiful as well!) :)

I think Anthology 3 hangs together best, and I especially like the Spectorless Get Back tracks on disc 2. The first disc of Anthology 2 plays well, too.

Anthology 2 for me.. although 3 is probably better in my heart 2 wins and i think is more important. disc of anthology 2 Real Love.. I'm looking through you, the false start on You've got to hide your love away, the live performances, the alternate versions of Got To Get you Into My Life and I'm looking through you shows a band not afraid to tinker till the very last I'm only sleeping. Side 2 the gorgeous demo of Strawberry fields, A Day in the Life!!!!!! Good Morning Good Morning even You know my name look up the number..

Good Morning Good Morning

I love that great thumping rhythm on the Anthology version.  And this:

Everybody knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed, it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep
And you're on your own, you're in the street

After a while you start to smile
now you feel cool
Then you decide to take a walk by the old school
Nothing has changed it's still the same
I've got nothing to say but it's O.K.
Good morning good morning
good morning a

People running 'round it's five o'clock
Everywhere in town it's getting dark
Everyone you see is full of life
It's time for tea and meet the wife

Not exactly laid back hippy stuff! Very John, though.

i've always preferred Anthology 2 better, i notice these things when i play it more than the others.
i remember first buying it when it was released & just played it to death! i was very dissapointed with
anthhology 1, but 3 was good, but i think more of the let it be outtakes could have been on there.

anthology 2 for me, all those acoustic versions of strawberry fields, i heard one of my favourite songs of there's for the first time on it "Yes it is" and real love was fantastic to hear.

I've actually only recently began appreciating this. I'm simply not as big a fan of their pre-Rubber Soul stuff as I am of the stuff that came after. thus, I never really had much interest in anthology 1. but over the last year or so I've come to love stuff like "My Bonnie" and "Searchin." and In Spite of All the Danger is a good song and cool because it's truly the "first" Beatles song ever made. not much on disc 2 interests me though. Moonlight Bay is good fun I guess. same with All My Loving for Sullivan. but I can leave the rest.

I like Anthology 3 the best. mastered versions of some of the esher songs, the awesome Helter Skelter take 2 (we want take 3!!!!), What's the New Mary Jane, live stuff from Savile Row. for me, it's the easiest to listen to right through.

I used to heavily favor 2, but 3 has really been growing on me lately.

i already had most of the stuff on bootleg before Anthology 1 came out, but there
was a lot of stuff on Anthology 2 that i haden't heard before like 12-bar original,
You've got troubles & That Means a Lot. that's probley why i prefer it more.

2 and 3 are definately my favorite.  I like 2 because of all the drugged out versions of the songs (like "And Your Bird Can Sing").  I love 3 because it has all the songs off of "Let It Be" that aren't all Spector-ed out, and the version of Hey Jude is pretty kick a**!

Totally agree!  Some of those songs are chilling to hear and beautiful "While my guitar gently weeps" "All Things Must Pass", etc.  Plus some of the unplugged and raw sounding takes.  But they're all good in a unique way, which makes the Beatles and this collection soo special!
