I think "Fixing A Hole " is a dark song . The cracks that ran through the door , to me are very sinister . It's as if something or someone is trying to penetrate Paul's world and do him harm . The silly people that run around and worry him could be the fans ? or maybe it's that drug crazed John knocking at his door with that mysterious women
(afraid5)(afraid5)(afraid5)

Under "inaccessible" and "humor" I'd include "What's The New Mary Jane?" as well. It sounds like it's a shot at somebody, but I've no idea who.

I'd have to say Eleanor Rigby. So dark, and yet, so true.
Posted by: BlueMeanie, June 18, 2008, 7:28am; Reply: 18
There are sad songs: Eleanor Rigby, For No One, She's Leaving Home; and songs that appear to be dark, but are not: Blue Jay Way. So I was about to say that there are no real dark songs. And then I remembered:
HELP!

I think " Eleanor Rigby " is a dark song , lonelyness is a dark place to be BlueMeanie ?
Yes it's sad but the imagery in the lyric is dark .
Poor Eleanor is not having a buddle of laughs , she's crippled by lonlyness , she's trapped in that dream .
I always think she's like one of the characters in a Dicken's novel , a witherd grotessque like Mrs Haversham in Great Expectations ?

Maxwells Silver Hammer is a dark song with dark humour (hammer2)
Yup! It never was a song I would listen to. But I have been trying to really listen to all the songs now and I have found that ones I had decided that I didn't care for before, I now like. This is one of them. And it is very sinister!

How did no one pick that?
That song scares the mess out of me, especially in the dark, late at night.

I heard it in the dark the first time and I just about freaked!
Posted by: freakchic9, July 18, 2008, 9:32pm; Reply: 32
The first time I heard this song was in the light and I ran for my life.

I've read that Revolution 9 was "creepy" before I heard it, so when I did hear it, I was "prepared" and it didn't freak me out, just sort of gave me a question mark above my head ;D
I used to think A Day in the Life was quite dark. And Eleanor Rigby, in a sad, lonely sort of way.

I was reading something George Martin said last week at some awards show , he was at in America .
And he said the string arrangement for " Eleanor Rigby " is based on the musical score to Hitchcocks " Psycho"
Which is maybe why it doe's have that sinister feel ?

"Run For Your Life" wins for me. A guy threatening to hunt down and kill his girlfriend just because he's jealous is pretty damn dark. It edges out "Norwegian Wood" for me because, in that, he only burns her house, as opposed to attacking her personally. Both such cheery songs.

i would have to pick blue jay way. i like that song though
Posted by: Oh Pineapple, July 24, 2008, 3:36am; Reply: 37
Yah I'd have to agree. That song was a little out there the first time I heard it.
haha

"What's The New Mary Jane?" sounds very creepy, specially with those weird echoing sounds.
Lyrically the darkest must be Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Eleanor Rigby or maybe Run For Your Life.
I wonder if Carnival of Light is creepy or just plain weird, but we'll have to wait until Paul decides to release it.

It's interesting that there are so many songs from the 'dark side', as the Beatles are so often associated with 'up' stuff, and Paul always points to how the songs are 'all about love or peace', but actually there's a lot more going on there!
Can't really think of anything new to add for myself, but I would say that my kids won't let me play Yesterday or Eleanor Rigby in the car - "Don't play the sad song!" they say! and I haven't let them hear Maxwell yet - it's the audio equivalent of a video nasty, all dressed up in a jolly singalong! They'd probably start singing it at school, and the teachers would pigeonhole them as mentally disturbed!
Just an after thought - I am the Walrus has a lot of unpleasant imagery, and John sings in quite a confrontational, 'I want to provoke a reaction from you' way, I think.

i always thought that Tomorrow Never Knows was a creepy song, especially in the dark, trying to fall asleep at night....
does creepy count as dark? well, i also think Run For Your Life is dark, lyrically. *shudders*

^Oh yeah, Run For Your Life... when I first heard it I couldn't believe the lyrics (bigeyes1)
And I said it before in the Food Songs thread, but I find "clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon" in Piggies quite dark, as in dark humour, I suppose. I dunno if it was meant to be that way, but it sounds to me like they are having to eat their fellow-piggies... :-/
