The Beatles "NOW AND THEN" TO BE RELEASED WORLDWIDE
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2 AT 2PM GMT / 10AM EDT / 7AM PDT
THE BEATLES' 1962-1966 ('THE RED ALBUM') AND 1967-1970 ('THE BLUE ALBUM') COLLECTIONS EXPANDED, MIXED IN STEREO & DOLBY ATMOS FOR 2023 EDITION RELEASES OUT NOVEMBER 10 https://www.thebeatles.com/announcement (https://www.thebeatles.com/announcement)
Thanks Euan. It looks like the countdown I'd seen to something happening on 26 October was only to the announcement ha2ha
And of course with the Stones release of Hackney Diamonds, we'll have competing new songs from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones! Back to the 60s!
I'm really looking forward to this!
Interesting what they've done. They've added tracks to the red and blues so they now include some covers. And also done the Giles Martin remixing on the early tracks. Will be great to hear Rubber Soul tracks in particular with the Giles treatment.

Yeah me too I might ask for them for my Christmas
It has been confirmed that there will be a CD Single of the song.

I'm looking forward to seeing the vault footage of Paul, George and Ringo working on Now and Then and the film that Pete Best contributed. As the Daily Beatle mentions it could be this, cleaned up.

Too bad the original audio is lost to history. A commenter on YouTube says according to a "reliable source" they were performing Cliff Richard's cover of Dream and Gene Vincent's Dance in the Street, which they changed to Twist in the Street. But the world may never know. ;D
The short doco on making of Now and Then is now out. It includes a snippet of John's voice isolated from the original tape. Sounds amazingly clear.

Same here. I'm so glad the documentary is available on YouTube and not restricted to Disney+. I got a lump in my throat watching it. Hearing John's vocals brought back again the pain at the fact that he was taken from us much, much too soon.
I hope this resolves any lingering concerns any fans have about the use of AI. I know there was a bit of a kerfluffle back when the term was mentioned.

Yes it seems the only AI is Peter Jackson's to isolate the vocals. There's no AIed vocals or anything according to Jeff Jones.
Just watched the doc on Disney. It's quite the haunting song isnt it? Cant wait to hear the finished project.
Counting down for 2pm our time when we hear it.
Oh my god that was amazing the vocal was so crisp and clear I had goosebumps !!
Goosebumps time, right? that clear Lennon vocal and bang on the tune as always.
"Haunting" is precisely the right word, Todd. That gorgeous melancholy sound is kind of eerily catchy.
One concern though: is George actually ON this recording?
I want to think all four are "in there", but Paul mentioned something about paying tribute, mimicking George's style/licks.
He said they still have the Harrison input - but did they use it?
George famously disavowed pursuing development of this track back in the '90s.

Was wondering that myself Mr. M. The way Paul worded it was that he copied or simulated the solo in George's slide style, but did it himself. I would love clarification on that.

Congrats on the show Kev. Let us know if he plays it.
Ok finally listened. I like it. I think Pauls done a great job in developing it from the bits of John's demo. Johns voice sounds incredible. Paul's added lines come in pretty seamlessly. It's more bits of George in some subtle rhythm fills given we've been told that Paul added the slide in a George-esque manner. I wonder if some of it is George's. The end guitar sounds a different tone to the solo. Overall the slide sounds less biting than on Free as a Bird or Real Love.
Some nice low key Ringo fills. He sound freer than on Free as a Bird and Real Love.
Good string arrangement in a Pepper/MMT homage by G. Martin

Yeah it is a bit ELO ish. Although to be fair ELO cribbed their sound from 1967 Beatles.
Two little niggles, the transition to the solo I find a bit abrupt. Also it ends very quickly. I thought they could have gone on for another twenty seconds or so.
Will have to find time to watch the video now. Sounds like it's a bit emotional for fans.

I think the issue with this and the other reunion tracks is they're album tracks having to do the heavy lifting of a single. People expect to be grabbed straight away while these songs work their way in like many great tracks do.
Stupid ass song. Everytime I listen to it, I break down. Its like the sheer impact this band has had on my life just floods in and turns me inside out. This song was a gift to us all and the reality that the end is near hits like a fucking hammer.

Sorry to be the party pooper ;D While I do love the song, I really dislike parts of the video with cut and paste 1967 John and George. Was really surprised when watching and thinking, no, no who the hell signed off on PJ doing this? Extremely tacky and amateurish to me. I won't ever be watching it again
The ending is pretty cool but I came up with an alternate ending using my writer imagination and a few Beatle fans on Reddit thought my idea was quite good
What's your alternate ending, Steve?
This is it HG
Ok, so it's nearing the end of Now And Then. We see the Fabs on the rooftop in 1969, in slow mo playing ( but no audio obviously) then John fades away, then George. Paul and Ringo morph into their present selves, still playing on the rooftop now (I'm sure they'd get permission lol). As the song ends, they stop and look at each other, smile. We see John and George's guitars leaning against the amps. Reverse drone shot moving away, showing London. Moving further into the sky until Paul and Ringo are just tiny figures on the roof. Travelling further back up into the atmosphere until the final shot is the globe of the Earth.
Showing that the world was for the Beatles and they belong to the world...

That would have been a good alternate ending, Steve. I've always appreciated your imaginative writing abilities over the years.
Perhaps your idea can still be used as I heard on the radio this morning that there are still some demo tapes that Peter Jackson has some plans for.
The Now And Then video ending was a bit bleak with the A Hard Day's Night closing concert stage empty...

Cheers guys Just my mind brainstorming lol. The ending with the iconic Beatles bow was pretty cool!
I noticed that PJ didn't use any Get Back footage in the vid, probably on purpose as he might've felt peeps had seen a lot of it since its release. But it was jarring when there was a few still shots of the boys at different stages of their career - Chiswick House, David Frost, the final photo shots, Abbey Road etc - but none of the Rooftop. But I can forgive him for that lol.
I think your idea sounds cool Stevie. But I like what they've done with the ending. To my mind this is meant to be an intimate video about them as people and their relationship, and then by extension all of us in our lives.
Just as John, when he sang the demo, was singing about Yoko, or Paul or his mum or Stu or whoever, now he's singing about anyone we know and miss. It applies to us all.
And the end of the video is about life, growth and loss that we all experience. So when we see them getting younger in the photos we also see our parents and siblings and others who mean things to us. Their whole lives encapsulated and eventually fading away as they've now gone, but Beatles, or whatever our friends and relatives mean to us, remain and always will. The Beatles are saying goodbye not because they were the greatest band ever and deserve a valedictory but because they have accompanied so many of us through our lives and there's always time we have to say farewell.
I think this song is going to be used a lot at funerals for the photo video sections that is almost obligatory now.
I'm proud to say I know the words to the song because I've played it so many times. I wasn't really a fan of the original demo throughout the years so didn't really bother with it. When I heard they were doing this song I was less excited but after hearing the song I was blown over.

Out of interest did you prefer John's original bridge ?
Fabulous concept of an alternative ending, Stevie. Very clever. I'd love to see that.
I also like the official version though...regressing them back through their phases and eventually accelerating into childhood which ties in well with the "sudden" ending and the apparent "finality" of this release.
Personally I LOVE the AI cut and paste wizardry with past and present Beatles rubbing shoulders in there. Reinforces the whole NOW (Paul and Ringo) and THEN (John and George) theme underpinning the song. Also it's very apt that cutting edge technology is being used, almost to blur time and re-calibrate our grasp of The Beatles' timeLESS appeal. No group embraced the future and pushed the boundaries more than they did.
I think they all do love/would have loved the new possibilities of what technology can achieve. They always demonstrated such giant strides in the studio.
I've always thought that arch communicator John in particular would have loved the internet and its potential.

I'm a bit miffed Paul removed the pre chorus part "I don't wanna lose you " in John's original demo. Maybe he though it meandered a bit ?? But that was a beautiful section and I was waiting for it in the new version.

What a beautiful story. I had been wondering what the musicians thought when they later found out they'd played on the final Beatles song. How sad that she died so young.
This excerpt made me smile: "The message said: This involves Paul McCartney. . . . Musicians dropped everything to be there." I can only imagine! :)

The Beatles are No1 in the UK Single Charts for Now & Then.
^^^
Toppermost of the Poppermost
Also apparently the fastest selling vinyl single of the century in the UK.
Also means this song is definitely in the canon. While Free as a Bird and Real Love are sort of on the periphery, a reissue of Beatles One will have to include this.

But it's on the new red album and the 2023 mix sounds pretty good to me.
Yeah it seems pretty pedantic. As far as I understand it there were two major singles charts in the UK at the time. Please Please me got No1 on one but No 2 on the other. And as the other went on to be the only single chart some people claim it wasn't really number one.
It's an academic argument. I don't see why the Beatles organisation has to subscribe to it. It was a number one hit at the time is all that matters to my way of thinking.

For the first time I heard Now and Then played randomly on a radio station. Sounds good in that context.
One verse from Now and Then particularly stands out for me: "It's all because of you."
Since the song was written "for Paul," I tend to believe that John was attributing the Beatles success to Paul. I wonder if John really felt this way.

Good to see you back, Loco!
I personally don't see John ascribing the Beatles' success to Paul, at least not in such an extreme way (i.e., "all"). But that's just my opinion. I would be curious to know who and what he is referencing. I would guess—and it's just a guess—he may have been referring to Yoko or Julian. But as to what the referent for "it" is, I'm not at all sure.

Hi Loco ;D
I've never heard this song was written "for Paul" I imagined it was another homage to Yoko.
Have you read that somewhere ?
There was a story going around that the cassette had "For Paul" written on it and so this then became "John wrote this song for Paul".
Peter Jackson and I think also Sean Lennon have debunked it though. If the notation For Paul was on anything it was on the cassette Yoko gave Paul before the original Anthology work and would have been written by Yoko or one of her assistants as in literally here's the Lennon demos for Paul.
As far as I've heard there's no indication or record of John's intention when writing the song.

But your scenario sounds correct. I can't imagine John writing "It's all because of you" for Paul. I'm 99.999999999% sure it's about Yuko.

That would seem the most logical. But he might have also meant his mum. Or Mimi. Or the bloke who delivered a really good macrobiotic pizza two nights before. That's the beauty of it being ambiguous. At least he didn't put Yokos name in it. Imagine Paul having to harmonise to that. ha2ha
