White Album vinyl with no numbers
« on: November 05, 2005, 02:07:52 AM »

I have a White Album vinyl with no numbers on the front of it, I find this odd because all the other ones I've seen have numbers on them. my dad said he bought it a couple days after it was released in Canada, so it's not a reissue or anything. Does anyone here now if this is worth more or less than the ones with the numbers? Any help would be appreciated

"The album's cover was designed by Richard Hamilton, ... The band's name was discreetly embossed in the middle of the album's right side, and the cover also featured a unique stamped serial number, in Hamilton's words, "to create the ironic situation of a numbered edition of something like 5 million copies."Later vinyl record releases showed the title in gray letters; an even later release on compact disc rendered the album's title in black."

That lp was the "Canadian" version it had the "poster" along with the 8x10 glossys just not the serial numbers on it! I can assure you it's not a "REISSUE" I bought mine at K-MART the first day it came out!!!!! I think only the UK and American one had the serial #s on them. Do you still have the pics and poster????

About 8 years ago, someone was selling a copy #000008 for $40,000 at the Chicago Beatlefest.

Weren't the first dozen or so white albums given to the Beatles?  I wonder which one of them got no. 1.  Methinks John.

Do all albums have their numbers pressed into the record. I have one that looks like the number has been scratched into it by hand then has a pressed number next to italso. I imagine that would take a really long time to do if they were all hand numbered. How does the numbering actually work?

The original pressings of the album had a top opening sleeve - ie the record opening was in the top of the sleeve, not the side. These were individually numbered and had "The Beatles" in embossed letters.

Later copies, from about the mid Seventies onward, lost the number and had the regular side opening sleeves.

What Kat is referring to is the matrix number in the run-out groove - this is stamped onto the record from the master plate. Any alterations to this number on the run-out would have been made to the master and stamped on all subsequent pressings rather than amending each record individually.
