I knew that Joe covered quite a few Beatles songs but I just found out that his very first release was a cover of "I'll Cry Instead". It was released in 1964 on Decca, of all labels!

What a wonderful picture.....oh to be in that record shop right now, that's my Utopia.

Incidentally, 'I'll Cry Instead' is available on a CD called 'Decca: The Beat Scene' which came out about 20 years ago.
4th September 1964 was a bit of a red letter day all round for Decca as it also marked the disc debut of the incredible Them!

I love looking at vintage record shop photos. It doesn't matter if I know who is in them but this one is especially good. September 4th...good to know the full date.

The thing I find most interesting about Joe Cocker is that, after the first 45 in September 1964, his second disc wasn't released until March 1968.....that's roughly from 'A Hard Day's Night' to 'Lady Madonna'!

Now in the 60s there were many examples of acts having flop singles but they normally (a) made a load of them until successful (David Bowie, Marc Bolan, The Sweet, The Status Quo, Ambrose Slade, Elkie Brooks, Kiki Dee etc.) or (b) disappeared without trace after the one or two releases. 
Three-and-a-half years between your first and second 45 is the equivalent in the 60s pop world to about three decades now.

Maybe they should make his spastic air guitar an official instrument in his honor! Always interesting to watch! He was an original!

I thought I had read that Joe was a little peeved by the impression but I guess that wasn't true.

"Apparently, Cocker himself was OK with the spastic impression. Years later, he told the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, 'I always found it quite amusing. But you have to understand I was a bit of a wreck at the time he was doing all that stuff... I thought vocally, he did quite a clever job with it.'"
