John Lennon Citroen Advt
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:59:28 PM »

Metro newspaper has just phoned me to ask what I thought of the Citroen advt which has John Lennon endorsing it. Someone else's voice is obviously used as John never endorsed products like this during his life. I was appalled when I saw it. The newspaper phoned Citroen who told them that permission had been given by the John Lennon Estate. What is Yoko up to, surely she has more money than she can ever possibly spend. The reason why Neil Aspinall left Apple was because he had tried to protect the Beatles image from much of the commercial world which he thought would damage their legacy, but there were more and more pressures to make a fast buck. I even pointed out to Metro that 'All You Need Is Love' is used for a television dating commercial. What next - Beatles songs used for nappie, condom, betting adverts - anything where the money is?

In France, where I live, a few years ago they used IMAGINE for a bank TV advert!

Imagine no possessions....

That's when I knew Yoko was capable of anything to live her life of luxury.

I think the Citroen advert is pretty bad.  I wasn't sure why I freaked out at first, but there's just something not right about it.  It definitely shouldn't have been made.  Although if John could have some input, I imagine he probably wouldn't be too bothered about it.  It's definitely strange though   :-\

 ???
What's that all about?
Yoko, why???
I don't see that having John Lennon on that particular advert (albeit in a fake way) helps to sell a car? He wasn't known for his driving abilities, in fact the car he's most associated with was a Rolls Royce painted oddly, he just says (is manipulated to say) that we should look for our own inspiration rather than go back to the 60's. Just don't get it. Must have been thought up round a table at the end of a very long meeting.

From Metro

Quote
Beatles fans are condemning Yoko Ono for allowing car maker Citroën to use images of John Lennon in adverts.

Beatles fans angry with Yoko Ono.

They are calling for a boycott of the cars, claiming he would be ‘turning in his grave’ at the commercial exploitation.

Critics are upset that film of the former Beatle is being used – despite Citroën getting permission from widow Yoko Ono and the Lennon estate.

Bill Harry, founder of the Mersey Beat newspaper in Liverpool, said: ‘This is totally out of order and will be depressing millions and millions of Lennon fans.’

Dubbed footage of Lennon and actress Marilyn Monroe is being used in TV adverts for the new DS3 hatchback.

Fans posted messages on Yoko Ono’s Twitter page, telling her ‘Shame on you’ and challenging her on why she gave permission.

Another wrote: ‘Yoko believes that John belongs to her alone.’

The TV campaign is called ‘anti-retro’ and claims to be anti-nostalgic.

BEATLE FANS ANGRY WITH YOKO.

Another scoop for the Metro. Tomorrow it'll probably be "SUN RISES IN MORNING!"

Euan, I want to say thanks for posting that advert, yet I also want to say delete all copies of it!! I grudginly accept the sentiment is possibly ok (although SHOULD every child have a laptop? perhaps some could do with clean drinking water, freedom from threat of war, relief from generations of poverty, access to healthy food produced locally?), but that overdubbed 'John' voice is awful awful awful. What were they thinking? I have heard much better impressions of his speech, couldn't they get hold of someone who could do it better? and why does it have to be John saying it anyway??
Why?
