Since today marks the halfway point of the three-day Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 I thought it was time to give it a thread. I have to admit that Woodstock has kind of overshadowed this festival for me but I've always intended to watch the D.A. Pennebaker documentary on it. I found this video tonight and have been kind of skimming through it.

Thanks for posting that, Kelley.  I'm happy it survives on YouTube.  I saw Monterey Pop when it was released in theaters.  It was only a matter of time until the East Coast had a festival of its own.

BBC Four aired a wonderful documentary on Otis Redding last Friday and, of course, Otis gave an incredible performance at the event....only to die six months later.
Otis at the time was more popular in Europe and his career trajectory is remarkably similar to Jimi Hendrix.

One interesting thing.....Otis lost his voice after the event and, while recovering at home, wrote a whole load of songs including 'Dock of the Bay'.
His inspiration for that song and many of the others was the 'Sgt. Pepper's' LP.

Parents! Mine wouldn't let my sister go see the Beatles in Philly in '64. They had their tickets and had planned to stay with her friend's aunt and uncle but then there was some rioting going on and that was that. And then there was my brother, who had his ticket to Woodstock. They said no to that too. So he didn't bother to ask when he and his buddies got tickets to see Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Fillmore East. He just went. That was a long way to hitchhike!

Hitchhiking then was as normal as taking a bus. Funny sometimes, too. You'd see people hundreds of miles from home gathered at freeway entrances talking about meet-ups in familiar places, as if planning holiday tours or bridge parties. Ah, the very flowering of humanity.

Oh and I was only 4 in 1967, so I only saw the video!!!!

Woodstock 69 got most of the acclaim because of the huge people concurrence; but in terms of music I find more favorite bands in Monterey 67: Jefferson Airplane, the Who, Jimi Hendrix (these three were present in both festivals), Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, just to name those artists who I love the most.
