Not feeling particularly patriotic this year.  :-X  I'd elaborate, but I promised myself no more politics here.

July 4 is always a poignant day for me anyway, the would-have-been birthday of twins I lost.

So I'm pouring a glass of wine and just waiting for July 5.

It sucks how many days on the calendar fill up with sad memories over a lifetime.  Nothing probably as sad as what you described.  Have another glass on all of us, get through the day.

Yes, as we grow older our calendars fill with sad memories.  But let's not let them overshadow the happy memories our calendars have accrued.

On July Fourth, I wax philosophical when I think how brave my maternal and paternal grandparents were when they left their homes in The Ukraine a century ago and immigrated to the United States..  They came to this country with only what they could carry by hand and with the dream of starting a new life and raising a family in a country that promised freedom.

Neil Diamond's family history is similar to mine and he expressed his feelings so well in the song he wrote...

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZXcPva-xLA" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZXcPva-xLA</a>

Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star

Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream

On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America

Home, don't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm

Home, to a new and a shiny place
Make our bed, and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm

Had my grandparents not come to The United States, they would have perished and I wouldn't be here today thankfully wishing my country Happy Birthday.

I'll grieve all I like, thankyouverymuch. But I don't want to further derail this thread.

You haven't derailed anything, Kathy.  Remember, this is a forum; a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.

My post, in its entirety, was meant to show how fortunate I feel to be here today wishing America a happy birthday.  I too have sad memories on my calendar of life as well as happy ones.  That calendar would not have existed if my grandparents hadn't immigrated here.

When it comes to grief, I was taught this at a young age in elementary school:

To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones,
and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time of war, and a time of peace.

         Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Lyrics:  King Solomon
Music:  Pete Seeger

I was taught the poem a year before Pete Seeger wrote the music for it.

Happy birthday to Bazs sister  party2

She's a Yankee Doodle Joy (her real middle name), Kev.  A real live neice of my Uncle Sam, born on the Fourth of July!   :)

The Fourth of July will come to a close here in the Eastern Time Zone in five minutes.  So until next year, what is better than The Stars and Stripes Forever with three piccolos?

Thanks, Kevin and Barry, very kind. I shouldn't have said anything. This year, it just got to me more than usual.

Ehh, Barry, I apologize for snapping at you yesterday. As I said, this year's Fourth was tougher than previous ones for some reason. But I should have held my virtual tongue.

Hope your sister had a good birthday.

Apologies aren't necessary, Kathy...

a time to keep silence, and a time to speak

It was your time to speak.

Hope your sister had a good birthday.

She did.  She spent her birthday with close friends she's known since childhood.

Thanks, Kev.  Both sets of my grandparents immigrated from Russia in 1920.  The first they saw of The United States was the Statue of Liberty, just like the picture I posted shows.  They were travelling light that day with just what they could carry with two hands.  They were the bravest people I've ever known.

Neil Diamond and I share similar feelings...
