Psychedelic Bands
« on: October 22, 2005, 03:47:45 PM »

I really love the psychedelic era of The Beatles, and I'm familiar with early Pink Floyd, which is kind of similar (Interestingly, when The Beatles were in studio two recording Sgt. Pepper, Pink Floyd were in studio one recording their first album), and later Pink Floyd and some Syd Barrett solo stuff. But, can anyone tell me which other bands were psychedelic in that era, especially bands using 'sound effects' in their music?

Beach Boys' Smile-era (doesn't get more psychedelic than that)

The Byrds. This morning I was listening to a Byrds compilation of mine and the song "Renaisance Fair" came on. I think that maybe I'm dreaming...

I smell cinnamon and spices
I hear music everywhere
All around kaleidoscope of color
I think that maybe I'm dreaming...

Maids pass gracefully in laughter
Wine coloured flowers in their hair
Last call from lands I've never been to
I think that maybe I'm dreaming...

Some flash on a soda of prism
Bright jewels on the ladies flashing
Eyes catch on a shiny prism

Hear ye the crying of the vendors
Fruit for sale wax candles for to burn
Fires flare soon it will be night fall
I think that maybe I'm dreaming...

I know most of those artists fairly well, but, I was thinking more of bands who - like Floyd and Beatles - used loads of sound effects (you know, tape running backwards, telephones, clocks, geese calling, radio broadcasts, etc. in their songs. You know?). I know the music of the Zeps, Hendrix, Cream, etc. These are psychedelic lyrically I suppose, but I mean in terms of those kind of sound effects. Maybe no other bands went that way. I don't know.

Great choice.  I'm trying to run down Roky Erickson to sing a song.  Apparently he's still active in Austin.  I love his voice.

Zappa, Bootsy Collins, Spencer Davis Group have all sprung to mind for some reason as 'Psychedelic.'

I thought "Dandilion" by the Stones was a great "flower power" song. That's a awesome list of memorable songs that you listen to. Some of those titles brought back fond memories!

You know a lot about music. I was watching a bio on Peter Frampton and they said that he hung around with Bill Whyman a lot. The narrator talked about the early Stones and there was a different drummer than "Charlie" in the band? Prehaps before they got signed to a record label???? Do you know who this boy was????
