Best British Invasion band next to the Beatles?
« on: April 30, 2009, 03:58:33 PM »

Assuming that the Beatles were the best British Invasion band, who do you think was the second best one?

I vote for the Who. Great songs and great musicians. I'm also a big fan of the Zombies, the Kinks and the Yardbirds.

Note: British Invasion are the British bands that started to produce international hits right after the Beatles, in 1964-1965.

I'm a big fan of all these groups, but I picked the Stones. Next to the Beatles, they've been the most influential.

I voted for The Who.

A long time ago I might have voted for the Stones, but their output recently has turned me right off them.

Thanks!

I like the Stones, especially during the 1960's, but I don't think they were as virtuous as the Who or as innovative as the Zombies and the Yardbirds.

1) Kinks (Golden Age 1966-72 rivals Beatles best)

2) Stones (Golden Age 1968-72 rivals Beatles best)

3) Who (Golden Age 1967-71 rivals Beatles Best)

4) Them (best rock singer of era-Van)

5) Animals (second best rock singer-Eric Burdon)

Beatles Best (Golden Age 1965-1969)

Best albums: Village Green, Exile on Main Street, Who's Next==each equal in quality to Revolver, but the Beatles had more consistently great albums than any of their British rivals.

My vote goes to The Kinks .
After The Beatles and Stones , Herman's Hermits were the third most successful British invasion band on the Billboard chart , America seemed to like them why ?

I'm a super huge Zombies and Kinks fan, and of course everybody recognizes the greatness that were the Stones and the Who. The Yardbirds were great too (especially the Beck run). Its hard to say.

The Moody Blues and the Pretty Things get my vote.

I added the Hollies in the list, which somehow were an important British Invasion band too.

I think Jeff Beck is somehow underrated, in comparison to the acclaim Clapton and Page got. Beck actually invented heavy rock guitar with the Yardbirds. "Shapes Of Things" is an early psychedelic masterpiece.

I've listened to SF Sorrow, maybe the first rock opera before Tommy and Arthur, but I wasn't very impressed. To my ears it sounds like another pretentious and derivative psychedelic album, with nothing new to say. I don't know if the Pretty Things can be considered as part of the British Invasion since they didn't have much success out of UK.

I always have preferred Tommy over SF Sorrow but I still rate it as a great album.True,The Pretties didnt have much sucess outside the UK and really not that much here anyway.A couple of top ten hits and one or two ,making the Top 50.But,some of their singles were very good, notably,Midnight to Six Man,Come See Me and Defecting Grey. They even made a 1969 appearance in a Norman Wisdom film, whats Good For the Goose.

Of course they can be good despite their lack of success, but I don't know if they can actually be considered as part of the British Invasion. I guess you are part of it only if you had international hits.

The Zombies!

I especially love "Care of Cell 44". That should've been one of the biggest hits of the 60s, I just don't understand why it flopped... Maybe people just didn't dig the strange lyrics...

The Zombies' Odessey And Oracle is my favourite non-Beatles album. "Care Of Cell 44", "A Rose For Emily", "Brief Candles", "Hung Up On A Dream", "I Want Her She Wants Me", "Butcher's Tale" and, of course, "Time Of The Season", all great songs. Awesome harmonies, hypnotic keyboards, melodic bass lines...

I voted for The Animals.  I always considered them The Beatles' antithesis and love them for that.  It's amazing to hear the voice that eminated from their diminutive lead singer!

Oh, what a cruel quiz. I love it!

I ended up voting for "The Who", but Manfred Mann was right up there. You can't fault the Stones for longevity, but I think the Who and MM were a bit more thoughtful in their lyrics. Bring on the tomatoes!
