Across the Universe

Such a beautiful song.  I just got done listening to the 2021 remix.  John Lennon's voice, the lyrics, and the orchestration.  The meaning behind it.

Perfection.  ;yes  icon_love

Loco, how do you feel about this version of Across The Universe?

Hello Goodbye:  There is no comparison.  The 2021 Mix is transcendent.  It is John's unadorned voice minus the louder chorus and Yoko's accompanying vocal.  Also, the flapping of the bird's wings at the beginning is missing.  I really feel John's presence and seeming melancholy as he sings it.  It's as if I were in a cozy warm bed on a cold chilly night just listening to him very closely as though immediately nearby and falling asleep into a twilight world of wonderful and peaceful dreams as the song fades to an ever quieting conclusion.

Loco, that wasn't Yoko singing the chorus in the February 1968 recording.  Two female fans hanging out in front of Abbey Road Studios were invited in to provide the backing vocals.

Let's let Lizzie Bravo and Gayleen Pease tell their story...

I'm still hearing the choir quite strongly in the 2021 remix. It is absence from the Glyn Johns Mix though. One thing I thinks more noticeable in the 2021 remix is what sounds like a splice of a different take when John sings Jai Guru (at 34 second mark).

The bird flaps are only for the version they did for the Spike Milligan album wasn't it? It was also sped up quite a bit I think.

You're welcome, Loco.  That's what this Forum is for.

But you should have known that it wasn't Yoko singing the backing vocal on Across The Universe.  Lizzie and Gayleen sang a pitch-perfect background soprano vocal duet.  Yoko, at her best, sounds like this...

were the bird flaps on the vinyl of the blue album back in the day, I think I grew up with the flaps.  Kind of like the james bond intro to help on the red vinyl , back in the day.

I don't have either anymore so looking for confirmation.  Seems all digital versions on spotify at least are void of these two intros.

The bird flaps were on The Beatles Rarities LP.  I never bought The Beatles Red or Blue LPs but I know that the Blue LP contained the version without the bird flaps as it appeared on the Let It Be LP...

That’s right. The bird flap version was originally on the Nothings Going to Change our World charity album in 1969.   Spike Milligan asked John if he could have Across the Universe for it.

Past Masters Volumes 1 and 2 were first released in 1988 as separate CDs.

If you remember hearing the bird flap version on an LP, you might have had this 1980 LP...

I like the Glyn Johns mix.  It's not overproduced as Phil Spector did for the Let It Be album and John's voice sounds more natural. Lizzie Bravo and Gayleen Pease are heard accompanying John with the "nothing's gonna change my worlds" as well...

nimrod:  I think the 2021 mix has made an important difference in the overall quality of this recording.   And I like it much much more as a result.  It's like I'm really hearing John Lennon's vocal in a new and unique way.  He was a superb emotive vocalist.  So, yeah, even a cappella, he's magnificently good.
