A previously unheard interview with John Lennon, a 90-part history of the British empire and new programmes from Alan Bennett and Dawn French were among the eclectic highlights of BBC Radio 4's autumn season unveiled yesterday.
Controller Mark Damazer also announced a weekly profile slot on Saturday evenings at 7pm, a weekly obituary programme on Friday afternoons, and a new presenter for Great Lives, the former Tory MP Matthew Parris.
He said: "I want Radio 4 to be even more responsive and agile, to give the audience the best possible platform from which to reflect on the passing week."
Frank Gardner, the BBC security correspondent who was shot and seriously injured in Saudi Arabia, will present a new series, Faces of Islam. He was described as "a major Radio 4 talent to come".
For a season of programmes marking 25 years since Lennon's death, the station will broadcast a "painstakingly emotional" interview conducted by Jann Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone magazine.
