Neil Young is playing a 6-string banjo tuned like a guitar.
My Earl Scruggs Standard is a 5-string banjo...
Standard tuning is this...
Fretting, hammer-ons, bends, etc. I know. I'm good at two-finger Delta Blues picking. Now I have to learn three-finger Scruggs picking. Earl Scruggs could pick 12 notes per second. It'll take me a lot of time to even get close!
He made one mistake in that performance and Lester Flatt caught it and commented at the end of the video. At 0:55 he was about to do a run down the neck but did a different roll instead. He did the run at 1:09 and smiled widely as the camera panned out. Even his error sounded great!
