Past Masters, Vol. I & II - what was the point?
« on: October 06, 2007, 03:19:43 AM »

I bought Vol.I back in the day, because I wanted one song or another, I don't remember.  But my question is - are the tracks on both volumes alternative versions of what was on the Beatles studio albums?

they were songs that weren't on any studio albums (besides Across the Universe) or were singles.

Past Masters contains all the singles, b-sides. EP tracks, and alternate versions not released on any official UK album.

I've always wanted to find the 2-disc edition. I know the 2 albums were comprised in just one double album, but wasn't that a limited edition?  :(

But Vol.II contains "Let It Be," which was included on the album.  Is that version an alternate version, not heard on the album, single, Anthology, or Naked?

you get the Let IT Be single version on Past Masters, the same one on the
Blue album. but the Album version was slightly different. obviusly the
anthology was a take & i think the Naked version was a completley new version
that haden't heard before (not sure though! :-/)

All three versions of Let It Be are from the same master tape. It contains two different guitar solo's, the more raunchy one is used on the original album, together with Spectors orchestration. The single (Past Masters 2) version is minus the orchestration, and with a different guitar solo, and the backing vocals are slightly higher in the mix. The version on 'Naked' is also a different mix, but essentially the same as the single.

The Get Back single and album versions are different recordings. Across The Universe was originally given over to a charity album in 1968 for the World Wildlife Fund, hence the wildlife sounds at the beginning on PM2. These were taken off for the Let It Be album.

Thanks for clearing that up! ;)
