Album with best Harrison song(s)?
« on: May 11, 2007, 07:46:10 PM »

I personally like the Harrison songs on Abbey Road because they're beautiful songs and really show George coming around as a songwriter. Even Paul and John compliment them.

I can see that Something is a classic and Here Comes The Sun is great but my vote goes to ...

... The White Album (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Piggies, Long Long Long, Savoy Truffle)
- While My Guitar Gently Weeps is superb and
- Long Long Long (USalley unheard) is one of my all time favourites ones of him!

It's a pity that Not Guilty or Sour Milk Sea (to mention just two) weren't included  :-/ ... they are gems!

My all time fav George songs were & still are in the Beatles.
I would choose Abbey Road (which i've voted :)), Something could be
my personal fav & Here Comes The Sun is a gem beyond words.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a knock-out song!, but i really didn't like
the other ones much on the  white album.  :-/

Yes, I agree with you. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a excellent song, but I don't really like the others on the White Album.

Argh! Another impossible poll!

It really is a complete toss-up for me between Revolver, Rubber Soul, and Abbey Road. They all contain some of my very favorites.  I went with Rubber Soul in the end, but tomorrow I might have voted for different album.  ;D

Absolute favorite George songs:

Here Comes The Sun
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (acoustic version)
Think For Yourself
Love You To
Within You Without You
Long Long Long
Something
If I Needed Someone
I Need You
Taxman
I Want To Tell You
Only A Nothern Song
I Me Mine
It's All Too Much

With the rest following behind. Again, my order might change tomorrow!

*sigh* I love polls. We should do one with George's singles!

I always liked If I Needed Someone.

For the early stuff, Dont Bother Me is underated.

Hi, Silby! Good to see you.

Agree with Don't Bother Me on early stuff. There's just so many George songs I enjoy. :)

I always thought the Beatles version of Not Guilty was excellant, & i'm baffled
why it didn't make the final cut on the white album. i think it would have worked
better than Piggies. :-/

So agree about Not Guilty, Andy! It's dark, slinky, powerful-- great stuff!

... Not Guilty and Sour Milk Sea replacing Piggies and Savoy Truffle and you improve his contribution!

I couldn't disagree more. Not Guilty: over a hundred takes and not one usuable. Sour Milk Sea is not better than Piggies and/or Savoy Truffle in my opinion.

The number of takes means nothing, in my opinion, and I think that it was very "usuable" but they chose others. Sexy Sadie took some takes too  ;) and (we can listened to outtakes of both in Anthology 3). Sour Milk Sea is superior to Piggies, I think.

To me it means that they probably tried really hard to get it right. I tend to think that it didn't work out to their satisfaction.

I agree on that ... they surely want it to make it sound different. Or ...
Weren't John and Paul the only members of the group that select the songs and the order of the album?
That could be the other side of the coin!  :-/

That is a wild guess. Surely, if George had proven himself to be a more productive songwriter in the years before, and had produced more quality songs, he may have had a bigger influence. But I think they all selected the songs for the album to be made. Anyway, I'm glad that you agree that they really tried to make Not Guilty work. It denies the idea that they were only working on Paul's or John's songs. Plus John and Paul were simply more productive than George, certainly in the years up to 68. The running order was usually made in co-operation with George Martin.

I was talking about the selection of the songs that made the album ... because, in this case, they recorded demos before the sessions began but some of those songs were recorded when the album was almost finished and in some cases because the author insisted (one example could be While My Guitar Gently Weeps) ...

It's said that John and Paul decided which songs and their order in the album ... I think that George and Ringo were not in London that day!

"October 16, 1968

Abbey Road. The White Album sessions. Paul, John and George Martin held a 24 hour session, beginning at 5pm and ending at 5pm the following day, choosing the songs and working out the sequencing of the four sides of the double album. They were up against a tight deadline, and every studio and listening room at Abbey Road was used for this marathon task: studios one, two and three as well as listening rooms 41 and 42. In the end 30 songs were presented to the public as The Beatles (and, as usual, the two sides of their new single was not included).

George was not involved in the final selection and sequencing because he flew to Los Angeles that day to continue working with Jackie Lomax on his forthcoming Apple album."

from here: http://wingspan.ru/bookseng/diary/m12_1968.html

I've never believed in what George said about that they had to record 20 songs of Paul before even Paul heardg one of him ... that's an exageration, of course ... like that one that says that they spent a lot of time and money on Maxwell's Silver Hammer ... they were the group and they were there but there are facts that they seem not to know pretty well ... lucky us that we've got all those history books and the data!  :)
