Songs forward & backward
« on: August 07, 2021, 12:11:41 AM »

Is there such a thing as a song that can be played forward and backward and still sound the same?

I was thinking of palindromes and wondered if this could be true for music as well.

Yes it's true, Loco.  John Lennon's Rain outro wasn't a palindrome...

But...

...Franz Joseph Haydn wrote Symphony No. 47 in G Major, Hob.I:47: III. Menuet two centuries before John Lennon wrote Rain...

It sounds the same forward and backward and is nicknamed "The Palindrome..."

Brilliant!  Imagine if he were alive during the 1960s.  He would have been bigger than The Beatles.   :)

Thank you, Hello.  BTW:  I loved listening to Haydn's Symphony.  OMG:  How refreshing!  You complimented me earlier on being a good poster, but I have to give you props for your role as an excellent poster.  You seem to know how to find things very quickly that really add to any particular discussion of any particular topic.

So now I know.  Yes, there are musical palindromes.

However, I'm still searching for the "Real Wizard of Oz," not the faux wiz of the movie.  I wonder if I'll ever find him/her.

But somehow I think that Home is where the heart is and perhaps that's where the real wizard really and truly resides.

Loco, you've already answered your own question.  The moral of The Wizard of Oz was Dorothy's realization that "There's no place like home."  Home can be interpreted on two levels; the physical home or house she lived in and the spiritual home, her inner being.

The Wizard's token gifts to Dorothy's friends just represented traits they already possessed.  They just needed reassurance.  The Wizard's gift to Dorothy required more effort on his part but he ultimately made her understand an important life lesson.  Remember Dorothy's age in the story.  Adolescence is a difficult period in our lives.  The Wizard taught her a lot in the few hours she was "away."  And it didn't require lengthy explanation and counseling, just reassurance.

I learned about Haydn's "The Palindrome" in music appreciation class in high school.  When you asked if there were any palindromes in music, you jogged my memory instantly.  I don't know of any other examples.  There might be but I'm sure none as complex as Haydn's Symphony No. 47 in G Major Menuet and Trio.
