Style Kath.  Johns leads were somewhat simple, sloppy for the most part, and somewhat distorted in my opinion.  George was usually a bit more technical and a cleaner player.  Paul is somewhere in between and throws a monkey wrench into the equation.

with the Get Back docu - I learned John did the solo on Get Back the song.  Never knew that.  In fact, previously to seeing it performed "live" for the take on the album, I assumed Paul had overdubbed the solo from the sound of it.

As for the guitar battle in the end, I had this video come across my youtube feed last week, found it very interesting how he broke the parts apart and played them.  Thought his John part was sloppy but Paul and George's parts sound great to me, take that back, all sound great to me, I enjoyed his explanation of each part too

I assumed it was George because it sounds like his 12 string. The final arpeggio run sounds like a George move too. But it's only my assumption.

John also loved those bent double stops. If I hear those in a Beatles song I usually assume it's John doing them.

I give up. ;)  I doubt I'll ever amass the knowledge to appraise music in this way. Guess I'm stuck being a plain old fan.  :)

Your better off that way Kath.  I've been a drummer all my life and i've always dissected songs listening to every instrument (never paid any attention to actual lyrics, but listened to the voices as an instrument too).  That takes away a lot of pleasure when hearing a song, but i'm stuck in my habit.  Passed that curse onto my son too.  Funny enough, my oldest brother cant do it.  I have to point out the really cool parts in songs to him.

Yeah I know i'm weird.

George's solos were short but always to the point.  My favorite is...

I'd like to expound a bit on my post.  In live performances, George played the solo, but on the recorded version, both George and John share the solo and are playing simultaneously...

Rob Taylor in his DVD series The Beatles to a Tee demonstrates this...

Mike Pachelli, in his instructional video, expounds further upon the solo...

As he explains, George and John were playing the solo simultaneously, identical with the exception of three notes in John's part.

You know Kev, there's always been a debate as to who played the solo on 'Every Little Thing' (John or George).  I personally think its George, but I have no proof to back up my opinion.

I think it's George too.

I assumed it was George because it sounds like his 12 string. The final arpeggio run sounds like a George move too. But it's only my assumption.

Right, Todd.  In March 1964, Rickenbacker presented John with a short-scale 12-string electric guitar based upon his Rickenbacker 325...

Rickenbacker 325/12

John played it just a few times in the studio.  He generally kept it at home for use in his songwriting.

Every Little Thing was primarily written by Paul and recorded in September 1964, thus the debate as to whether it's George or John playing the solo.

There's nothing wrong with just being a plain old fan, Kathy.  But being in this Forum you have the luxury of learning the technical aspects of the music the Beatles made.  Most fans aren't so fortunate.

Plenty of reading about the song here.

http://www.beatlesebooks.com/every-little-thing

This site seems confident that John played the solo on his 325/12 Rick.

I've always considered Dave Rybaczewski's site a good source, Kev, and used it in researching some of the songs in the Song Of The Week Series we both contributed to.  I'm trying my hardest to hear the difference in tone on the recording of the electric 12-string we hear on the recorded version which Dave says is John's Ric 325/12 to George's Ric 360/12.  They sound very similar to me especially since The Beatles' recordings were professionally mixed.

Someone should ask Paul or Ringo.  :)

Yeah I know i'm weird.

Nah, you're not weird, Todd. I just came across this line in a restaurant review someone left on OpenTable: "There was live pianist which made alot of mistakes in the key strokes which made the background music quite annoying to listen to."

You're clearly not alone.  :)

I'm probably the only woman in the world whose eyelashes flutter when someone uses a great word choice. And my ex would take photos of dust devils and once stopped in his tracks, thrilled, because he spotted a wall cloud. To each their own.

I'm just a bit wistful because I know that, if I had the knowledge everyone on here has, I could appreciate the Beatles' music that much more.

Listening to and enjoying their songs is the very best way to appreciate The Beatles' music.

Personally, the only time I spend dissecting their songs is when I'm trying to improve my guitar skills.  I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can replicate my favorite Beatles guitar riffs.

Very simply, musicologically and ethnically, The Beatles were essentially empirical melangists of a rhythmically radical yet verbally passé and temporarily transcended lyrical content, welded with historically innovative melodical material transposed and transmogrified by the angst of the Liverpool ethnic experience, which elevated them from essentially alpha exponents of, in essence, merely beta potential harmonic material, into the prime cultural exponents of Aeolian cadenzic cosmic stanza form.

Did they flutter?   :)

Hmmm No love for the solo in Octopus' Garden?? George really put together a great solo in that song. I think a bit of his friendship with Eric Clapton was starting to wear off :)
