I'm in no danger of picking up a 1980s Bowie L.P. (or any 1980s L.P. for that matter) but there is a sense with Bowie's career that a novice could pretty much pick up any record and it wouldn't be a wasted exercise.
In this, I think he is almost unique.
It certainly doesn't apply to, say, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan or Neil Young.
'Pipes of Peace', 'Down In The Groove' and 'Are You Passionate', among many other examples, are dire. Not sure Bowie quite has one of those.
