I'm in no danger of picking up a 1980s Bowie L.P. (or any 1980s L.P. for that matter) but there is a sense with Bowie's career that a novice could pretty much pick up any record and it wouldn't be a wasted exercise.
In this, I think he is almost unique.

It certainly doesn't apply to, say, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan or Neil Young.
'Pipes of Peace', 'Down In The Groove' and 'Are You Passionate', among many other examples, are dire. Not sure Bowie quite has one of those.

I heard two songs off of it and hated both of them.  Ehhh

None of the songs are going to challenge Life on Mars or Changes in my playlist. But I like the instrumentation in particular. It's an interesting piece of work rather than being particularly commercial . Of course the irony is it'll probably end up being one of his best selling albums.

The first time I can remember seeing David Bowie would've been on Top Of The Pops in 1979 performing 'Boys Keep Swinging' with the video of him in drag.
The next time, would've been the following;
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2wWWUvROuI&amp;feature=player_embedded" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2wWWUvROuI&amp;feature=player_embedded</a>

It would've been the last thing of the 70s/first thing of the 80s I saw on tv!
It freaked out my 20-year old cousin, who was even in a punk band then!
I think Bowie's influence will grow in the future. There aren't many artists who have really reached out and touched as many people - maybe just Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Michael Jackson.
The only artist I can compare Bowie to now is Kate Bush, someone who takes great care of their art, and totally puts themselves in it.

I have to admit that he freaked me out quite a bit during the mid '70's. LOL But I was very young then and David Cassidy and Donny Osmond were more my speed.

I love this photo of him, which popped up on my Instagram feed. Taken in 1969, I believe.
