Maharishi Mahesh Yogi dies
« on: February 06, 2008, 01:31:31 AM »

This probably should have been posted in the NEWS section, but I thought more people would see it here and he played such a big part in the Beatles history.

Guru who taught Beatles meditation died 'peacefully,' spokesman says

AP file
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the International Meditation Society and "The City of Nations" in Kashmir, is seen in London, England, in this Aug. 24, 1967 file photo.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a guru to the Beatles who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, has died at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop, a spokesman said Tuesday. He was thought to be 91 years old.

"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that the Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age."

Once dismissed as hippie mysticism, the Hindu practice of mind control that Maharishi taught, called transcendental meditation, gradually gained medical respectability.

He began teaching transcendental meditation in 1955 and brought the technique to the United States in 1959. But the movement really took off after the Beatles visited his ashram in India in 1968, although he had a famous falling out with the rock stars when he discovered them using drugs at his Himalayan retreat.

I wouldn't mind starting TM to find peace of mind as I believe it has helped millions of people in their daily lives.  Too bad he died, I mean he couldn't have been that bad of a person after all George forgave him before he died and they still spoke fondly of him in the Anthology.  I like that he was 90 some years old and no one really knows when he was born so his birth like his life was shrouded in mystery.

Rest In Peace  Maharishi!

She came along to turn on everyone
Sexy Sadie the greatest of them all.

Sexy Sadie how did you know

First I think of the ending TS Eliot's "The Waste Land": "Shantih Shantih Shantih"

Then I think of James Joyce's parody of Eliot: "Shan't we?  Shan't we?  Shan't we?"

I heard 91 too. The whole Mia Farrow thing was probably just a big misunderstanding, I mean George is a pretty good judge of character....and Paul forgave him too!
It is still kind of sad though, I just read something about him the other day....

By the way I love your new signature The Fox Drummer....Andy Smith "Shocked and Stunned!" The Ruttles? ;)

Another strange cosmic co-incidence?.....When Across The Universe was projected into space towards Polaris, it was the very same day The Maharishi died. Feb 5th 2008.

That's what the guy from some Transcendental Meditation group was saying as he was trying to recruit me for a retreat course. lol

I thanked him for the offer but said I meditated through music. Of course, what the icon above is smoking helps too.  ;D
