Octie, here in the United States we use the term "John Hancock" because his signature was the largest on the Declaration of Independence (legend has it that he wanted Great Britain's King George III to be able to read it without his spectacles).

Somehow over the years it became "John Henry." Wikipedia says that it's "Cowboy Slang."
