Paul's Best Sgt. Pepper song
« on: November 11, 2004, 02:02:11 AM »

This one has a ton of choices.  So far we need more votes so we can tally up the singles and then the actual Best Paul Song, so vote away :)

Fixing A Hole....one of Paul's finest moments on Sgt. Pepper even though it's highly underrated.

If you listen to Sgt. Pepper which was paul's baby on the headphones you will notice something very interesting! It is well documented that he wrote songs that would compliment his bass playing! The bass lines in numerous songs hit you like a sledge hammer when heard on headphones! Listen to Fixing A Hole, With A Little Help From My Friends, It's Getting Better, Lovely Rita they all have very pronounced "bass lines"! AKA Fixing A Holes my favorite!

Getting Better is what I am hoping to get the other guys in our band to do. Would love to perform that song. The 'on the beat stabs' of that F (add9) will always get me going!
Well, .....all of it. Harmonies in 3rd verse 'I used to be' etc....Amazing toon!!!!
If we don't get them harmonies when we try it, it won't be performed. lol
Anyone got a sitar?????  lol

This one's easy for me. "Lovely Rita."  Perhaps it's the opening guitar notes, or the "ahhhhhh" at the beginning that sounds like a man standing on the highest hills of the world about to declare his newfound love, or the instruments that at times sound like a conniving feline twirling its whiskers, or the piano solo, or the fact that it is such an unlikely love song (you gotta love a story about a guy who's smitten with a meter maid, and not a beauty model), or the fact that I can picture Paul "sitting on a sofa with a sister or two" (and I can't tell if they're laughing, or just staring at the wall in silence, but it doesn't matter), or how EVERY time I listen to it, it makes me feel so happy.  I think it's one of their most overlooked songs.  I'm gonna listen to it right now.

Finally an easy choice : "She's Leaving Home" . One of the greatest Beatles songs.  ;D

Lovely Rita. The "aaah" at the start gets me every time. Love it.

It has to be Lovely Rita for me, which is in fact my fave song off Sgt. Pepper overall.  I've always loved the language and words, what they suggested and the imagery.  To me, the song jumps up at you with a cheeky charm about it, and the rhythms and harmonies from the boys really compliment the song as a whole.  I just love the sucker.  ;D

It's between "Fixing A Hole" and "Lovely Rita" for me. I LOVE both, so it's a hard decision... But I like "Lovely Rita" a little more, it's one of my absolute favorite Beatles songs. And I agree with apple sauce, when you listen to Paul's Sgt. Pepper songs with headphones, the bass line jumps out at you. Especially in "Lovely Rita" and "With A Little Help From My Friends", which might be why I love "Lovely Rita" so much. That and the lyrics, they're so clever, or perhaps witty is a better word.  ;)
